I installed photoshop on a new system that should be screamingly fast.... and it's not... I need some help figuring out why photoshop hangs like CRAZY. It's almost unusable at times.
Things I have that should make it super fast...
2 gigs of ram and a nice video card
The application and OS reside on RAID 0 Array
Windows has it's own partition on that array for the paging file
Photoshop has a partition on a separate IDE drive for the scratch disk.
My processor is a dual core 3 Ghz Pentium.
Photoshop is running like it's on a 486... It's terrible... For the most part, photoshop is the only application that does this... I can't figure it out... any ideas?

Pretty much everything. It just hangs all the time. Menus using a brush... drawing.. etc
It will work ok for a couple seconds.. and then it goes back to hanging something awful when I go to do anything else with it. I have indeed allocated other scratch disks, and tried reordering them, and I have tried allocating more ram. So far, no good.
Photoshop comes with some optional plug-ins on the install disk which address certain issues with certain configurations. I'm at home so I can't look just now to see what they are. I believe there is one plug-in that is specifically for dual-core processors. Browse your install disk for a plug-ins folder and read the readme files for a description of each one. I seem to recall one readme which describes the lot.
Sorry I can't be more specific. My reference material is 40 miles away.
I checked my CD and was unable to find what I was looking for. There are several registry modfiers in the Goodies/Photoshop Only folder. But none of them pertain to dual-core processors. It is possible that some of these might help, but I can't recommend any of them -- I've never used them.
Have you checked your Task Manager to see if another application might be conflicting with Photoshop -- hogging the processors?
I'm going to check out my CD, that plugin sounds likely to be the solution... It would be nice... I built this machine FOR Photoshop... and the fact that it's "sucking" for lack of a better word... is very irritating.
I have looked up and down for conflicts, and made sure scratch disks were defragged, and plenty of free resources and what not... I'm sure it's the plugins... Photoshop just seems to be acting weird...
The only other thing I could guess at is fonts... I have a lot of them, but I would think that would only affect load time and font related activities... not all of photoshop...

Not many plugins, LOOOOOOOOOOOTS of fonts. (something like 2100)
A few actions.. but I have worked on font heavy and action heavy systems before...
Large JPEGS should not be an issue as this was built to be a production machine for a photographer... (basically if large jpegs slowed things down, then I would chuck photoshop in the trash becuase it would be useless, so that's definitely not it)
Sorry I'm taking so long to get to this... over the weekend... my power supply for this machine was fried... That may have been part of the problem.... We'll see....

I agree with thinkwelldesigns. You definitely need to prune down that font list. Why does a photographer need fonts at all?
Where did you get all those fonts? Most large font collections come with a manager because it's a necessary item when that many fonts are involved.
Photoshop is especially sensitive to font corruption, too. Are these fonts from a reputable foundry?
It's easy to test the font issue. Deinstall 1600-1800 of them and see what happens (500 is a LOT of fonts).
actually... Moderator... I feel that it was actually a combination of solutions....
The problem was fonts... I feel that I had way too many fonts... That was suggested by one person...
Another person suggested I get a font manager... which I did, (however I got a FREE one called the AMP font veiwer)
and then I also looked to install some of the plugins from my Photoshop CD....

Few comments... I'm not just a photographer... I also do tons of design work... (and photographers often make other types of products like cards...)
Also, thinkwell, I probably would have awarded more points to you if you had also suggested some FREE alternatives... All that software was trialware... etc
I search for a good free alternative and the AMP font viewer seems to be serving me very well... I've never used a fontmanager before... so I don't know how good it is comparatively... but it seems to work very well... I like it better even just for viewing all my fonts...

Have you tried setting up additional scratch disks in the edit>preferences menu? What about allocating more RAM to it in the preferences as well?
When exactly is it slow? When doing particular filters or even drawing simple shapes?
