Watermarks

Hi,

I want to put a watermark on images, which meets legal standards, as it were, is this a "mask" in photoshop?

Also, if I put a watermark on it in photoshop, is it not possible for a photoshop user to remove the mask/watermark? I need the watermarked version to be uneditable completely, by anyone.

I am new to Photoshop, so please bear with me....

What version of photoshop do you have?

If you put jpg files up on the internet that are watermarked, people wont be able to remove them as it is all on one 'layer', but if you put up the psd file, they will be able to as it is just sitting on a layer...

Yep, rook is right. Although any watermark is removable depending on the size and complexity of the watermark.--there is some code you can use to not allow to people to save the images, but you can always print screen and grab it off the web.- So i'd say make a decent size watermark mabye 1/3 of the image, can be a single color but is pretty transparent.(you might want to add several different shades of the single color throughout the watermark(like shadowing or something.)-makes it more difficult to paint out.

Good idea on the diff shades of color over the image...  :)  I always just did the usual half transparent watermark that isnt colored.

For watermarking I typically do this:

1) Create a New Layer
2) Insert Text/Simple Image
3) Right Click on Layer and Select "Blending Effects" (Wording may be slightly off)
4) Adjust the Transparency (or Opaqueness) down until the watermark is at your desired visibility.
5) Save using an option that doesn't save the Layers.

That’s a tall order. Since Photoshop is primarily an artist’s tool, it’s virtually impossible to create an image that some smart PhotoShopper can’t alter to look like the original.

If this is something that is vital and you are willing to invest some $’s, check out Digimarc. In Photoshop, go to Filters/Digimarc/Embed Watermark/Personalize/Info to link to Digimarc’s website.

They offer a variety of services to protect copyrighted images. The core of what they do is give you a license to activate the Digimarc filter in Photoshop. This lets you create a visual watermark on your image, but it also embeds a hidden electronic id into each image. When someone opens your image with their version of Photoshop, a warning comes up that the image is copyrighted by you and gives them info into how to contact you.

Depending on the subscription level, Digimarc will also continually scan the World Wide Web, watching for an image to show up with your copyright info. It then notifies you of where your image is and how it is being used.

There are also other options. This is something photographers and graphic artists have to deal with all of the time. How will you be using your image and what do you want to protect it against?
