Illustrator CS2 Text Handling is VERY SLOW

Hi, Hoping someone can help me out regarding this ....

In Illustrator CS2 text handeling is very very slow. I cannot embed my cursor where I want it or choose letters to edit or fix .  It takes 5 seconds or more from initiating an action to when the action is carried out...( if it is carried out). The delay sometimes means a duplicaion of the action because I cannot ever tell if the delay is because it is so slow or because the action request did not 'take

This user is running an older Mac os9 - is there anything i can do to speed this up for them ?  Would it be just the OS getting slammed by processes and it just slows the programs down ?
