Question

Entering Russian Text In PhotoShop

Asked by: labeler2003

I need to put Russian text an a graphic.

I have set Windows 2000 to have Russian available.  I can type Russian text in MS Word and Paint Shop Pro, but not in PhotoShop.

I used to be able to type Russian in PhotoShop.  My son then "cleaned up" my computer by reformatting the hard drive and re-installing everything.  Now he is gone back to school and I can't get PhotoShop to type in Russian.

For now, one way round the problem is to use the character map in windows

Start Menu > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map

Choose whichever font you want, then select the letters you need. Sometimes it's easiest to select the whole alphabet.

Once you have selected the required characters, use the copy to clipboard function, go to Photoshop, click the text tool to start a text layer, chose the font size and setting etc, then paste. This will get Russian and Ukrainian Cryllic characters into Photoshop.

How did you used to be able to do it?

In the past I was able to use the Windows on-screen keyboard.

First I needed to have Cyrilic selected as an available language in Windows.  This is done by going to:

Control Panel > Regional Options > select Cyrillic as a language option (use the Advanced options to be sure Russian Cyrillic is installed)

This puts an icon in the system tray that allows you to switch between English and Russian.  When set to Russian, Cyrillic characters will be typed using the standard keyboard.  But it is easier to use the on screen keyboad.  To do that I:

I could go to START MENU > Programs > Accessories > Aeccessibility > On Screen Keyboard

The on-screen keyboard will display either English or Russian characters, depending on what is selected.  Now I can directly type Russian into any program (привет), except PhotoShop.

Hi,

Do you have a Russian font installed in your font folder?

1. For me, I usually installed Chinese font e.g SimHei (You can installed your russia font here.) in C:\WINDOWS\Fonts folder.

2.On the desktop toolbar, there is a language bar, select 'Chinese' in your case select 'Russia' i guess.
(For WIN XP: If there is no language bar on the desktop, you can add one by going to Start button > Control panel > Regional & language options > Language Tab > Details...> Click on Language Bar button and check on "Show the laguage bar on the desktop. If there is no 'Russia' on the lanuage bar, you can set it by going to Start button > Control panel > Regional & language options > Language Tab > Details... > Click on "Add" button to add the langage you want.)

3. Open photoshop and open a new document. Cick on type tool. The important thing here is to select the CORRECT font. For me, as I am going to type in Chinese, select 'SimHei'- a font for Chinese characters from the font selection drop down menu.

Lastly, if all goes well after the 'Russia' font is selected, click on the document and begin typing....it should work.

I had put Russian fonts on my computer, but since I found .tff font files in the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM folder I copied them there.  Copying them to the C:\WINNT\FONTS folder has made them available in PhotoShop.

But there is still something going wrong.

I have several Russian fonts installed.  No matter which font I select, even an Engllish language one, when I type text with Russian selected as the language PhotoShop switches to Times Roman.  This does not type Russian characters.  I can then highlight the text and select a Russian font, and the text is changed to correct Russian characters.  Once switchedto Russian this way, the text continues to use the Russian font.  But when I type more text, the new text is automatically typed in Times Roman.  (The existing text stays in the Russian font.)

Any siuggestions for getting the font to stay set at the font I select?

try typing your russion text first so that you have the text written already, then create a text box and copy this text into it. Or use it as an overly image
