Here is a great tut..

http://www.lunacore.com/photoshop/tutorials/tut020.htm

On page 2/2, you can roll over the final image and see a before and after.

If you search for "Smooth skin photoshop" , you will get a lot of good tutorials.  AND, you will get a lot of junk.  I don't know how some people think that blurring the heck out of an image is sufficient.

A technique that I use a great deal is to make a duplicate of my image layer and apply all of my smoothing tricks to the second layer, going just a little bit overboard (too much smoothing)

Then I put a blank (white) mask on the second layer. I then click on the mask to make it active, and set my colors to black foreground white background. Then with a soft brush set to low opacity, I can "paint" the detail back into areas where it is needed, such as the eyes, hair, and lips

If after a test print I find that I restored too much detail and need to soften some areas more, I simply make the mask active again, change my brush to white and "paint" the softness back to the way it was.

Did any of this work for you?

by: benreasonPosted on 2008-02-29 at 22:29:32ID: 21020228

D brugge,

appreciate if you can show me the graphical tutorials on this or be more descriptive.

by: sledgePosted on 2009-01-11 at 20:52:00ID: 23351191

I do exactly the same as  D brugge.

1. Open the picture you want to work on.
2. Make a copy of that image
3. Make your changes to that copied image.( in my attached pic I've called it blurred but you make whatever adjustments you need to this layer)
4. With the adjusted layer active click on 'layer mask' button.
5. With your foreground color set to black and the layer mask selected, use paint bucket to fill the main picture. (you should see all your adjustments disappear)
6.Choose your brush tool and change your foreground color to white. Use a soft brush with opacity set to about 40%
7.With the layer mask still active start brushing in the areas you want to smooth.

You will notice your adjusted layer starting to show through the main picture.

As D brugge says, If you find that you have have brushed too much of the edited picture through, just change you brush color to black and start brushing the edited layer away again.

I'm unsure about what more benreason needed. I thought sledge did an excellent job spelling it out, and the tuts grakum linked covered a lot as well. I suggest points be divided evenly. Since there was no reply to sledge's post, most of us assumed that the question was covered. If he needed clarifacation, he should have said so.
To say at this late date that the question was never answered is like going to a restaurant and refusing to pay for the meal because you're still hungry.

if you guys want to divide the mark or what so ever feel free to do it. however the tutorial and the answer was not up to my expectation. well i was a paid member and i join with cost to get great answer however i don't really think expertexchange member has the expertise in this arena.

and most of the answer was a very beginner and low quality editing without proper workflow. when a beginner come in and join this site, they expect good answer with great details and step with visual aid.

if i'm here for free then i might given you guys full point!

I understand your frustration. When you pay money for an answer, you expect it to be full and complete and well, ...... expert.

But you have to look at it from our point of view as well. We (the "experts") don't get paid anything, (other than a free t-shirt when we reach a certain milestone) for our contributions. We do this, mostly because we enjoy helping others, and receiving help in return.

Most of the people that post questions in the Photoshop Zone are beginners with very little knowledge of the program. Without our knowing what level of expertise a person has when they ask a question, we tend to give very simple, very basic answers.

If the answer is too basic, we expect the person asking the question to give us guidance and tell us that they want more detail, or tell us that the answer is not complete.

As to the level of "experts" here, I think that you are correct. There are not a great number of people here with an outstanding knowledge of the program. But as the (currently) top ranked expert in the zone, I can say that I spend time on other forums dedicated to Photoshop, and don't find the level of expertise any better anywhere else.

I hope that you don't give up on us. Please continue to send us your questions, but let us know when the answer is not what you are looking for. As for myself, my email is in my profile. Anytime you ask a question in the Photoshop zone, and you feel that it is not being answered, drop me a note and ask me to take a look..

- David Brugge

BTW, please send us a link to the Yahoo Answer so that we can point others in that direction when they have the same question.
