How do change every white pixel in an image into a transparent pixel with photoshop CS3?

To rephrase my question, how do you take all the pixels of a certain color (in this case white) and make them transparent (opacity of 0%) without using the magic wand or hitting delete? I know this can be done in photoshop but I've never been able to to do it from the tutorials I've found. Does anyone know how to do this? Somehow you're supposed to use layers and set their alpha or something, and mask this or that. I've seen other graphics packages have this feature, "Color to Alpha" where you just select your color and that's all you have to do. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance for your time.

Another option if you want to go the "mask" route -- you can do exactly as I said above, but instead of cutting, go to "SELECT" on the toolbar at the top and to "inverse" -- now all the pixels BUT the ones in question are selected.  Then go to the bottom of the main toolbox layers pallet and hit the "Mask" button (hold cursor over the box with the hole and it will say "Add vector mask").  Then (also assuming you have a transparent background...) you've just made a mask with your image showing up and only those selected pixels being like "holes" in your mask (transparent).

I want a ducky! Um, thanks for posting. That's the way I've seen it done in most of the tutorials. Thank you for putting it in terms I can understand.
shady1024,

Do either of these answer your question enough to assign points and close it out?  Or do you need more help with anything?
