Question

Increasing the space between letters in Photoshop CS3

Asked by: gabrielPennyback

I have some text I want to stretch out the spacing on, but the AV field is inactive in the Character palette. . The directions in Photoshop suggest t that you justify the text and then enter the desired spacing manually, but of course justification is not an option and the spacing fields are not visible.

So how do I do it?

Thanks!

The A V window controls both kerning and tracking.

These are pretty much the same thing except kerning is the space that you put between individual letter pairs and tracking is applied to a whole sentence or paragraph.

Photoshop needs to know which letters you want to work on. Select (highlight) some text first, then the A V window will become active.

If you are spacing the letters on a wide area, try selecting all of the text and holding down the Ctrl and Alt keys, press the right and left arrows on your keyboard. This will spread or contract the letters in increments of 1/100th of an em (this amount can be reset in your preferences)

You can also place your pointer on the double arrow pointer beneath the AV and drag back and forth as you watch your text spread out and contract.

Have fun and good luck.

Gabriel:
If you want to activate only the AV to adjust the tracking of the selected characters, just select the layer where the text is placed.
Go to Window>Character to display Character Window Component if necessary.
From there, the AV is activated and you can adjust it as you want.

Note: Make it sure that you are not in the insertion mode if ever you use the Type tool.

This is just one way of doing it.

I appreciate the answers but my problem is that the AV box in the character palette (or whatever you call it) is greyed out, inactive.  I can't adjust it to 5, 10, 15 or whatever. Is it  a bug in my copy of Photoshop, or do I have some wrong setting in preferences or somewhere?

Have you selected the text first?

by: gabrielPennybackPosted on 2008-07-28 at 23:46:32ID: 22109088

Yes

You need to highlight the entire text to enable tracking.
Try this keyboard shortcut.

Take the text tool (T), select and highlight the entire text you want to increase spacing.
keep the 'ALT' key pressed, and then start clicking the 'right arrow key' till you get your desired spacing.
this will increase spacing. To decrease, use the left arrow key.

OR,
If you want to just increase/decrease space between specific characters,  (kerning)
take the text tool and click between the two letters (without highlighting), use the same keyboard shortcuts mentioned above.

i agree with dreamjay, if you want to activate the kerning AV box(left), you have to put your cursor in between the two letters.
for spacing AV box(right), you can just select the text layer and adjust the space.

If you have tried all of this and it STILL doesn't work, you may need to rebuild your preference file.
Close Photoshop and restart it. As soon as you click the button to start Photoshop, hold down the Ctrl+Shift+Alt keys. You should get a dialogue box asking if you want to Delete the Photoshop Settings File. Click Yes.
If you get any other dialogue box or if you don't get any, you didn't have the right keys down in time. Start over.

Sometimes my propensity for density amazes me. David, your first answer had everything I needed, but I guess I was too tired and stressed the other night  to follow the breadcrumbs. you even mentioned the double arrow under the AV box, which of course appears only under the right AV box. However I have to tank Sheharyaar for specifically bringing my attention to the fact that there was an AV box on the right! (I guess it's time for a stronger prescription).
My aplogies to MINSUPERB and deamjay. If I'd been paying attention, you wouldn't have had to post in the first place. I'll try to make it up to you on the next question.

Thanks,
John
