i didn't say that you have to highlight the text casinnola :)
i said "select the text layer" which doesn't highlight the text.
plus i tried your steps of selecting Commit any Edits, but sorry to say it didn't work for me, as soon as i hit the Commit any Edits button, the changes are applied to the text. and then i have to select the layer again to scroll through the font list; which can be done without involving the Commit button.
Sry, misread... thought you suggested he highlight the text.
Using the Commit button has always worked for me. Once I finish typing the text, I hit the Commit button, then start tweaking the text using the Character and Paragraph panels.
Your way works also. And isn't that the beauty of PS, that everyone can have their own way of accomplishing the same thing? :D

With your cursor still in the text, hit the checkbox button at the top of the Photoshop window (Commit any current edits). Then click once in the Font Family box at the top of the window and use you up and down arrow keys to scroll one by one through your fonts. The text will change in real time.
Scroll through the fonts, the changes will show up in real time
