are you going to print the label on CD label stickers or directly on the CD itself?
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI have all 3 products and versions. Here is the story. Borrowed a CD to take to a class and somehow in my laptop case my bag got pinched and the CD got a crack in it. Now it won't work. It has an expensive software on it. I have the CD Key and have told the software manufacturer of the problem. they will not send me a new file. They did say I can download the demo "A full version" just add key code which we have.
The problem is I have create a CD label that matches the look of the original. I have the scanned image in a JPG format currently in Adobe Photoshop. CS3. I thought it would be best to crop off the edges of the CD and the circular center piece. The "Doughnut hole in the middle. Can this be done if so how. Please advise. Thank you.

in illustrator
follow along with the attached pdf for visuals.
1. start with a cd template (two white filled circles with black strokes) imagine the light blue box in the background is your image you want on the cd. reference visual #1
2. select both the small and large circles with the selection tool (black arrowhead tool). with them both selected, choose Object>Compound Path>Make. You should have something like #2
3. now select the circles and the image in the back ground (the blue box in my example) and choose Object>Clipping Mask>Make.
4. done!
Outer dimensions of a CD is 118mminner 21mm for label purpose.
Bring the JPEG into Illustrator, draw a circle of 118mm and align both to be centric. press CTRL+7 to clip outer edges.
Draw 21mm circle and centre with the first object, fill circle with white.
You now have a CD label.
If you have a CD label on a sheet you don't need to do the clipping and inner circle. Simply measure where the label is in relation to the edge of the page and align your image to that on the same sized document in illustrator. Print and peel away the label and you be fine.

Captain Reiss,
When I selected "L" to pull up the ellipse tool. I was noticing the ellipse is white (is it supposed to be white) and when I choose Control 7 this error occurs.
I got an error "Cannot make clipping mask. The selection must contain more than one object." I do not know what this is or what to do about it.
Also I do not know how to set the size of the ellipse to 118 mm. This is great can you help me knock the rest of the clues out. Thank you.
For the clipping to work you need to select the JPG AND the 118m circle together. the circle needs to be on top of the JPEG.
Place the JPEG first, then draw the circle. the colour of the circle is irrelevant as it will become transparent once you use the clipping mask.
Illustrator allows you to draw a circle using the ellipse tool freely but you should use the dialog box to draw it. Simply click the page and a dialog for width and height comes up.
Enter 118mm for both or 4.65inches if you prefer that. Now align the circle with the JPEG and do the CTRL+7.
The white circle needs to be created in much the same way then the big one. Just use 21mm or 0.83 in to draw it, then you need to align this with the centre of your clipped CD label.
The easiest way is to bring up the transform palette from the Window menu and use the middle position of the little nine dots which form the alignment grid, select to highlight this. Now select your clipped CD label. Then type 150 in both the x and y box on the Transform palette. Now the clipped CD label is aligned at 150mm from top edge and the same from left edge of your document. Now you select the small white circle and do the same (150mm for x&y) on the Transform palette and the circle will be centric to the label.

Use the magic wand, select the white area outside of the image and click delete.
