Ok I have a weird one. i've been looking at a computer in the user copied photos off the SD disk deom the camera on the 23rd. NOt on the 27th they looked and the thumb nails are grey blocks. The name of the file is there but the image thumbnail is not there. Unfurtunately they misplaced the SD Disk, or this would not be as much of an issue. That issue aside, why would the thumbnails go grey? Other scan disks still have the thumbnails.
I looked at the MyPictures dierctory as well there are a number of thumbnails there that are grey as well. I thought maybe the files were deleted off the hard drive, so I used an undelete tool to look for them and no files with the IMG_####.JPG. So there were thumbnails that were in the My Pictures folder that I guess pointed to the SD disk.
So is there any way to recover thumbnails?

You'll notice that the folder is a "favorites" folder, so the thumbnails are links to the actual picture. That means if the picture isn't where the link thinks it should be, it won't show.
Your only solutions to being able to see the thumbnails are either a) copy the originals to your hard drive, and link them to the "favorites" folder by removing the existing thumbnails and creating new ones or b) find the original disk -- and they'll only show up in the favorites folder so long as the disk is attached to the computer.
Think of the SD disk as a CD; if it's not in the drive, it isn't visible.
