Question

I want to "round" off the corners of jpegs using Paint Shop Pro X.

Asked by: wisemat

I am a complete novice using paint shop pro - other than the usual easy stuff. I have a number of photos and need to round off the corners. I have tried following some instructions that someone else left but they are making no sense at all.  One was to create a new image with rounded corners and merge the original photo but I'm afraid I didn't even get as far as creating the second image. Can anyone provide the answer in non tekkiie speak for me?  I also have ULead  photoimpact so if there is an easier way using this then no problem

Thanks but this is one of the solutions that I could not get to work. I can't create a new image with a transparent background! My options to create a new image are ok until I get to the background and my options do not include transparent! I have Raster which gives me a checked background / and I cannot paste the image (using CTRL+C or any other normal option) either within Paint Shop Pro or from Explorer. Vector Background doesn't give the option for a a transparent image and forget art media which is the final option. The rest of the solution might as well have been in chinese as I couldn't even get the first bit to work but thanks anyway!

> I have Raster which gives me a checked background

That checkered background is Paint Shop Pro's way of telling you, "there's nothing here." Translation: it's transparent! :)

Now, whether you even need to concern yourself with transparency for this (giving an image "round corners") depends on how you plan to use this image. Is it being added to some other image or is it going on a web page? If it's going on a web page, what will the area behind the image look like -- a solid color or a pattern? I'll move onto the actual steps once we have more specifics.

Also note that, if you do need transparency (to be determined), you can't save your final image as a JPG. They can't retain transparency. To retain transparency, the most common file formats to save to are GIF (which has very simple transparency, but is widely supported) and PNG (which allows for more complex transparency, but is not supported in older version of Internet Explorer).

Thanks for this - I need it for 2 things.. The photos I can live without now (probably) but I have an oval image that is going to be the logo on a web page.  I erased the white background and left myself with a chequered one. Saved both as png and gif, imported the photo/image and still had a white background.

I have worked in technology for 20 years and can manage most applications with F1 but this is stumping me seriously!  If you can help you can have my brownie points for getting this done!

Thanks

Okay, you're almost there. The last key is that you need to tell Paint Shop Pro to keep those areas transparent. To save the file, follow these steps:

1. File > Save As (If you do a regular Save, you don't get a chance to set any options).

2. Choose your filetype -- let's go with PNG.

3. Click the Options button, then Run Optimizer.

4. On the Colors tab, make sure that 16.7 million colors is selected. Then go to the Transparency tab

5. Choose "alpha channel transparency" for the type, and "Existing image or layer transparency" for the area to be transparent.

Then click OK to close the Optimizer window and Save to save your file. That's it.

Note, again, that older versions of IE won't support this. You could follow similar steps but save to GIF, which is supported by every browser I know of, but it's not going to look as clean.

Superb!  Saving as PNG gave me a black background but as a GIF it was perfect!

Thanks
