Question

Photograph chrome products

Asked by: meteorelec

hi all

i am having difficulty photographing chrome products for our website , i am using a light box, 7MP digital camera, 2 100w white light bulbs and adobe cs4 to touch up.                   This is working fine for all other products, but as you can see from photo A which would be the desired look and photo B (my photo) which are the same color/material are a fair bit apart! and my photo at this stage has even been touched up a bit in photoshop!

can anyone offer any advise on how to get the same look as in photo A?

meteorelec,

The major difference I see between the photos is in the reflections. For Photo A, the camera and lights are positioned to produce a nice reflection from a light coming from the side of and above the product. This brings out the reflection so you can see it's shiny material, and all the little ridges in the metal. From the broad - rather than pin-point - look of the light in the reflection, it looks like a softbox or reflection off a foamcore board was used on that side. Judging from the nice shiny return along the edge closest to the camera, there was probably a second light to the left side of and a bit behind the photographer - this one wasn't as strong as the one to the right of the product, so you get reflections, but the shadow remains.

Cheers,
LHerrou

The problem is with your light setup. The light box is designed to diffuse light. In this case you want some more direct lighting to give you the needed highlights.

Stick with the same setup you have, and try adding one more light in front of the piece, about 30 degrees up and 30 degrees to either side. If you really want to get fancy, you might try one more light 30 degrees to the other side at half the intensity.

I agree with all the comments on the lighting.

You can also tweak in Photoshop.

The lighting effects > render Lighting effects Can sometimes help though a little tricky and not guaranteed to produce the best result.

You can also overlay a brushed metal effect

as this tutorial

With levels adjustment and sharpening you can achieve similar to below.

I could have got better quality with a higher quality original.

Nice work.

I'm going to go out on a really short, really strong limb here and say that the mac has a nice, bright LCD screen. Unfortunately, the Mac LCD screens often seem to render images more bright than other monitors.

Here's some useful information on monitor calibration:
