Pictures are compressed when they are saved, and the art of compression depends on the format you choose when saving the picture.
As your nick is "newbieweb", I suppose, you are interested in saving pictures for web :-)) The formats which are usually used on web pages are JPEG, PNG and GIF. JPEG has the best compression for photos, PNG and GIF for simpler drawings, logos, titles etc. Actually, to be saved in GIF format, picture can have up to 256 different colors.
You choose the format in which you save the picture in the dialog box Save As. The easiest way to do this is to write the extension, e.g.:
mydog.jpg
ourlogo.gif
ourlogo.png
If you save the picture in JPEG format (extension .jpg), then the dialog box "Save as JPEG" appears, and there you can choose the quality. I recommend you to check the box "Preview" - it is good to see the picture while you are adjusting the quality so, you can find the compromise between the file size and the appearance of the picture.
Important: always save the original of the picture, and save it in smaller quality as copy (File > Save as)! Maybe you will need the original for another task, where you will need the quality.
If you need smaller pictures using GIF or PNG, let me know... Or another explanation about JPEG, too :-))
