iPhoto 6 upgraded the auto-generated thumbnails, reorganised the photos and rebuilt the library file to a newer format to support the newer features it has.
There's another problem you may find .. iPhoto 1-5 organised photos by year, month,date whereas iPhoto 6 has 2 root folders Originals and Modified. The result is that you might have a lot of duplicated photos when you allow iPhoto 4 to re-index your photos .. You'll also have lost all your albums, slideshows and keywords.
I STRONGLY suggest that you DO NOT delete the library file as only the current Library file (the one upgraded by iPhoto 6) sill contains all your albums, keywords etc.

iPhoto didn't change the pictures, it only changed the library. Go to the location the photos are stored, delete the library file, and start over. The photos you had will be in the "Original" and "Modified" folders.
