convert photo to outline or simple drawing

Hi,

I have a few images (mostly photos) that I need to transform into outlines and basic drawings.

One of my images is a metallic kitchen funnel that has reflections of the white setting, and hence very white and very dark spots throughout the image.  How can I make something like this into a simple drawing/outline WITHOUT (and this is key) going crazy, pulling my hair out or go on a shooting rampage??
