setting picture resolution(dpi)

cause you can always select the image type you'd like to use (ie:.jpg, .gif...) then use the slider to grab the correct dpi setting.

example, click a pic, on optimize tab, choose "jpeg - better quality", then use the little slider dealie to select the dpi you'd like

to hit the whole canvas, goto:

modify>canvas>image size

there is a setting in there that will make global dpi changes if you'd like

yeah but where do I go to see what a .jpeg currently is?  Is that over in the optimize bar where it says quality or selective quality?

something else that might prove helpful for you to know is that you can compress different areas of a jpeg to different levels.  this is from FW manual:

To compress selected areas of a JPEG:
In Original view, select an area of the graphic for compression using one of the Marquee tools.
Choose Modify > Selective JPEG > Save Selection as JPEG Mask.
Choose JPEG from the Export File Format pop-up menu in the Optimize panel, if it’s not already selected.
Click the Edit Selective Quality Options button in the Optimize panel.
The Selective JPEG Settings dialog box opens.

Choose Enable Selective Quality and enter a value in the text box.
Entering a low value compresses the Selective JPEG area more than the rest of the image. Entering a high value compresses the Selective JPEG area less than the rest of the image.

Change the Overlay Color for the Selective JPEG area if desired. This does not affect the output.
Select Preserve Text Quality. All text items will automatically be exported at a higher level, regardless of the Selective Quality value.
Select Preserve Button Quality. All button symbols will automatically be exported at a higher level.
Click OK.
To modify the selective JPEG compression area:
Choose Modify > Selective JPEG > Restore JPEG Mask as Selection.
The selection is highlighted.

Use the Marquee tool or another selection tool to make changes to the size of the area.
Choose Modify > Selective JPEG > Save Selection as JPEG Mask.
Change selective quality settings in the Optimize panel if desired

NOTE>>To undo a selection, choose: Modify>Selective jpeg>Remove jpeg mask

another thing is that before you export, look at the export preview to view your file size and make last minute changes.  you can see the quality of the images change immediately with the adjustments you make, so you can find exactly what you'd like as a balance.

thats good to know, so I can make the image smaller in bandwidth but keep the text clear.

yeah I've been doing that but the person I'm designing the website for has heard from a friend and takes it as gospel that all images on the site must be 72dpi so I'm just trying to make her happy.  

sorry, didn't know you were posting, i was just thinking of every possible way i know of for you to control file size.  yeah, it's a really neat feature.  good for making a high quality focal point on an image, but not keeping the same quality for thet background, or like you said, keeping text clear.

well yeah, that's it.  what i mean is that FW has a tendency to want to change the image dimensions when you change the res if you have "constrain proportions" selected.  for instance, instead of degrading the quality, it will want to make the image smaller in dimensions so you'll still achieve the requested dpi, but the quality is maintained.  what you want is the dimensions to stay where you want them, and degrade the quality of the images.  whenever i adjust pics like this, i write down the top number (width), leave the "constrain proportions" selected, change my resolution, and if it wants to adjust the dimensions, i plug the width back in and i'm all set.  let me know if this doesn't make sense.
