This works great when I am web publishing, but I am placing the pics in a Word doc and they lose their clarity. I have tried the Desktop publishing option in the wizard, which creates a .tif file, but this is still not successful.

Try the following - apols for the number of steps - I don’t mean to sound patronising.
With your image open in fireworks, again choose the export wizard to keep it simple.
Continue past where you choose - a desktop publishing application, - brief explanation called "Format Selected" - click the exit button -
It should display another window called "Export Preview".
On the options tab, there should be a drop down box called 'format'
Select BMP24
Once selected, click the 'export' button on the right (beside the ok and cancel buttons) and export to a desired location - 'save'
When in word - Insert > picture > from file
Chose the location and file you exported from fireworks - see how it looks now.
Regards
Mark
