I'll second Nathana21.
Don't bother with irfanview... that's just unecessary.
PNG is nice because it preserves transparency, like gif...
but it supports translucency, and jpeg compression as well, so unlike the hard edges of a gif, a png has nice soft anti-aliased edges.
If you want a format that preserves the most data, including layers - PSD is your best bet... or TIF.
Lots of media and print houses use tif, but layered tiff files (or any layered file) are not good for web because they are huge. Too much unnecessary data.
If you have to use for web, there is plugin called super png. Use that as it will reduce file size comparatively maintaining quality. Its free and can be installed in photoshop folder. Just read the instructions properly while installing..

I don't know if any of these have addressed my problem. I have a graphic designer developing graphic work for me in Photoshop. I use Fireworks which uses png. From Fireworks I want to do the slicing and create an html website. However, when I open a PSD file in Fireworks it does not open all the layers as it would in Photoshop. I am not that familiar in photoshop and find Fireworks a lot more user friendly. How do I open the psd in Fireworks and maintain the same integrity as it had is photoshop. (or ai for that matter)?...Or...How does my designer give me the file in png format with all the original integrity of the psd file?
Regards,
Dave
you are running an older version i'm guessing. Now that Adobe owns it, you can get the upgrade and import it properly

Hi livewirewebsolutions
What version are you using, I know Fireworks 8 can open PSD files maintaining the layers, you can then save the file as a PNG. Although technically both nathana21 and tcicatelli are correct that standard PNGs' do not contain layers, Fireworks PNGs contain a hidden section that other applications can't read, very much like exif , this hidden section stores Fireworks information like layers, slicing, interactivity i.e. Popup menus etc.. Like yourself I prefer Fireworks over Photoshop, it's a great tool.
Hope that helps.
Cheers
