replicating images in photoshop or fireworks

I'd like to be able to replicate an image(layer) (perhaps varying in size?) across a canvas.

I thought that there was a way to do this automatically in photoshop (cs2) or fireworks (cs3).  

I'd love to be able to do this replication in a spiral pattern but other patterns would be OK too.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
