Can you tell my how I can to the above? Have downloaded and extension called Rectangle Assistant which draws an excellent smooth rectangle but it creates a path. How can I convert this to an image layer, or create the rectangle from scratch. Have used Paste Into successfully but the rectangle created by the Rounded Rectangle Tool has jagged corners.

I have got that to work but it creates a "solid" rectangle (i.e. an area with curved corners). What I want is a "frame" into which I can insert an image (like a picture frame around a picture). Is there an easy way of say converting the rectangle into a frame with a transparent inner area?
create two paths, one on/inside the other where you want the opening in the frame to be, then select both and click the punch paths button on the path panel
hold shift to select both

I think it's Modify/Combine Paths/Punch in FW8. Anyway, it appears to work fine.
Can you explain, however, the difference between this and Modify/Combine Paths/Join?
Also, if possible, can you tell me how to center one path inside the other (I suppose one can work out the x and y values knowing the width and height of each path but I wondered if there was an easier way (i.e. center the inner path relative to the outer path.

One further question. I want to "paste inside" and image so I end up with the frame around the image.
What you suggest creates a Composite Path and if I try paste inside it pastes the image into the frame rather than inside the frame. I assume I have to convert the Composite Path to use paste inside. How do I do that?
from what I have just tested, make your outer path of the frame, then the inner, but don't punch them, then "paste inside" the inner path;
otherwise, if you have the frame punched, paste the image as a separate layer and move it behind the frame
hopefully one of those two methods will be what you need
