Question

Movie Cropping?

Asked by: EdmondClay

I have created a small movie http://www.bcproductions.com/billdemo.html but I built the whole thing in the middle of the stage.  Now I discover that I have a ton of white space that needs to be cropped away from the graphic to allow the movie to reside comfortably on a web page without interfering with the surrounding graphics.  Is there a graceful way to relocate the image and all the symbols and their placements to the 0/0 upper left corner so that I may reduce the movie size to just the image?  Thanks.

The only way that I can think of is clicking the Edit Multi Frames button, selecting *all* your content with the mouse, hitting Control G to group it, and hitting Control K to align everything.

Try that, I hope it works :)

It didn't work because so many of the graphic elements are individual symbols.  It just crammed them all into the upper corner of the bottom graphic.  The grouping command didn't seem to hold everything and in any event nothing went to the upper left corner of the stage.  Where did you get the Control K info.  I've never seen that key.

by: SuperMarioPosted on 2000-09-12 at 20:23:06ID: 4283931

You can just go to Modify - Movie and where it says Dimensions, click the Contents button.

by: EdmondClayPosted on 2000-09-12 at 21:18:57ID: 4284247

This won't work either because the graphix will be left behind by the movie (Stage) that will change its dimensions but not the graphic.  I tried it.

Hi.

Just a note here. The Ctrl-K key combo is used to align up symbols, either in the horiz or Vertical direction. So I don't think it could help :).

Here's what you could try:
a. Click the 'Edit multiple frames' button.
b. Select Ctrl-A to select all the elements, and do it twice to make sure.
c. Now, Ctrl-G to group all elements together.
d. Next, Ctrl+Alt+I, or go to Window-Inspectors-Object. Here, click 'Use Center Point', and fill in you X and Y values as shown.

Hope this works for you!
BR,
Shekar.

Oops .. forgot! After you change, break it apart by using Ctrl-B!

by: DiamondDPosted on 2000-09-13 at 11:28:59ID: 4293450

If it is a small animation you can use the inspectors panel and move you symbols one at a time and in doing this you nail the x,y co-ordinate right on the money everytime... the only catch to this is that you need to do it for all the key frames... it's not to time consuming but it is the most precise way!!

Goodluck!

by: EdmondClayPosted on 2000-09-13 at 11:51:16ID: 4293765

In fact I believe it is the only way and the way that I have finally accepted and just finished.  I moved the critical objects with the inspector and the x/y coords.  I cheated on the VU Meters after 220 frames I just ran the duplication game, so they don't really match the sound after that point.  ah well.  looks perfect for about18 seconds.  Then if you're still paying attention, get a life.  If no one else can come up with a better solution I will award you with the points because you seem confident that it can't be done.  I am fairly certain that your solution is the only viable one despite the onerous price I must pay to remember that next time I should plan ahead.  ahem....

You can check the Align to Page checkbox to align it to the top left.

by: EdmondClayPosted on 2000-09-13 at 15:11:47ID: 4296047

If it were a simple and single layer graphic, yes, but since it is layered in four active parts I cannot group them and expect them to arrive at their assigned coordinates.  They all want to go to the top left corner.  There's the rub.  Yes, I used all those techniques to move everything possible to the upper left corner, then I must hand place every single keyframe that has a motion tween involved.  See?  The problem is solved by planning ahead and positioning everything correctly in the first instance and not arbitrarily.  Once things are positioned you're stuck with the keyframe and the only altering allowed is each individual instance.  I sort of knew this to begin with but hoped for a dispensation from the Flash Gods. Ah, well.

by: SuperMarioPosted on 2000-09-13 at 19:08:03ID: 4297826

Right, right. I've run into this problem myself, though, and it seemed to help when I did a combination of those methods.

I suppose what I did, is I hit Edit Multiple Frames, zoomed all the way out, and then I took the mouse cursor and dragged a rectangle around every single possible symbol there was. Meaning I drew a huge selecting rectangle to do everything. Then I just clicked and dragged to the top left.

Yep.

I think DiamondD's answer is nearer to the mark. In fact, I had thought of saying the same thing, but I didn't know if you had more than 20 symbols or so.

If that was the case, then it would really be a royal pain-in-the-neck to go around clicking on each and every symbol, using the Inspector to align it up, locking up the rest of the layers and so on.

Best of Luck ;-)!

BR,
Shekar.

by: EdmondClayPosted on 2000-09-13 at 23:08:12ID: 4299713

I had ten symbols and two of them were placed and rotated 10 degrees at every keyframe for 36 keyframes.  The rest were placed in various keyframe order ad infinitum.  Notice the VUMeters and that little red marker that bounces along.  Every one of those positions is a keyframe. So I should have started with the background placed at 0,0 and then I wouldn't have had to do it twice.  :o(

by: maxouPosted on 2000-09-15 at 01:38:08ID: 4312999

I think that is very simple:
step 1: make a new movie clip
step 2: copy all the frames from your movie ant paste then into the movie clip
step 3: delete all layers from the movie
step 4: place the movieclip on the stage

You can resize it, move it, make it whatever you want!

A movie clip is one of the three symbol types... graphic, button and movie clip. create a new one, copy and paste all your frames into it, and put it on the stage.

better yet, use the method I said first but:

don't group it, and don't use control K. Just move it so it looks correct relative to the upper right corner, and resize j0 movie.

It's near the onion skin buttons near the bottom left side of the timeline.

Maxou - I cannot make it work.  I will be glad to email you a copy of the file and then you may try to do it.  If you like.  Thanks anyway.

SuperMario - Nope.  tried it. won't work.  Must have something to do with the bassackwards way I probably built the file in the first place. ah, well...

I hope you adjusted the little bars that pop up that allow you to adjust which frames you're editing...

by: EdmondClayPosted on 2000-09-18 at 13:40:14ID: 4348054

No I din't....what does that do?

by: EdmondClayPosted on 2000-09-18 at 14:39:05ID: 4348857

I tried it and there still remains the problem of a bunch of motion tweens that refuse to travel along with each of these grouping exercises.  Understand that each takeup reel has 360 frames and 36 keyframes set at 10 degrees apart with motion tweens to create the spinning reel effect. The VU Meters are also tweened instances of separate symbols.  Could this have something to do with the difficulties we are having at moving all to the 0/0 corner?  Thanks.

by: SuperMarioPosted on 2000-09-18 at 14:49:02ID: 4348938

Want me to try it?

by: EdmondClayPosted on 2000-09-18 at 22:27:56ID: 4351100

Sure.  How do I get the file to you?

by: EdmondClayPosted on 2000-11-26 at 17:30:45ID: 5582821

I preferred the answers that skekakr provided.  Not that maxou was wrong, he just had tougher competition for the solution.  Shekakr put forth what seemed to be a slightly greater effort.  I would just as soon divide the points appropriately but alas I don't know how.  All participants put forth excellent efforts and have upheld the repute of Experts Exchange in the finest tradition.  I thank you all.  I just got a copy of Learning Flash 4 VHS from Lynda Weinman.  I feel a little silly now that I have learned so much since posting the question. ttfn.
