Question

button actions: playing a certain portion of a flash movie

Asked by: pilot7x7

hey,

im using "next" and "back" buttons for a flash movie photo slide show. what actions do i implement so that i can have clicking the button play only 10 frames starting from the current frame and then stop? (140, 150, 160)
keep in mind this is not the gotoand play function.
i basically am trying to use the play function, but stopping after 10 frames.
likewise, how would i do the same thing for the "back" button? instead of just going back 10 frames, i'd like for it to, starting from the current frame, play backward 10 frames and then stop.
i also need to know how to have the movie stop when it reaches a certain frame instead of playing all the way through--unrelated to buttons
200 pts. comin fast.
thanks

Oh how to stop the movie was your other question, sounds like you are just needing a simple stop action in a frame? If so just double click the frame in the timeline and in the actions dialog put in a stop.

Coincedentally I was actually working on making the very same thing for myself.
By using actionscript you can do all of this without any keyframing etc making a much smaller movie. It is also much easier to update as all you do is paste in an extra image and change one number in the script and you are done. To scroll horizontally or vertically only takes a few tiny changes also (some y's to x's in the script). It has built in deceleration and the speed can be changed by changing one number in the script.

check it out, dont be afraid of the script its quite simple and I am happy to explain it, feel free to ask me how to modify it and get it in your movie if you like it. You can see it, and download the .fla at

http://www.visi.com/~mgason/travel/testing/script_scroll.htm

this really is a much better way to go than keyframing

To do this in a simpler manner, create two movie clips in your main frame of the current scene. Give them instances like "back" and "forward" just to remember.

In the forward movie clip paste all your animation frames as they are in your present state.

Then paste these frames in the back movie clip also and tehn select all of them and do "reverse frame"

Then go to the main time line of this scene (that is where your movie clips are placed)

Then make forward and backward buttons and give them actions that will use "tell target" and "play" to target "forward" and "back" movie clips to play.

In your two movie clips give a stop action at every 10 frames you want to stop.
If you are having difficulty then let me know.
