We are in the planning stages of our e-commerce website and are considering using some flash on our homepage. I was just wondering whether this is a good idea considering some of the potential challenges faced by flash. One of the challenges I see is if the browser does not have the flash plugin then they are forced to install the plugin. Another challenge may be performance of the site if the user is on a 56K modem. Also is there an efficient solution that would allow me to detect whether the browser has the flash plugin and if not then redirect them to a non flash site. Does anybody have any thoughts on this subject. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

In addition to that there are a couple more items. Flash (if not overloaded) can be faster to download than other images, particularly if animation is involved. And as far as people not having it, here is a link regarding version penetration of the Flash player (from September of last year):

That Flash Player detection script in the Kirupa is very easy to install and fairly accurate... :)
As for the Flash Player penetration ratio... I think you are pretty safe as long as you create your Flash movie for FP6... (I'd love to say FP7, but I'll postpone it till the midst of this year...)
The bottom line is that you have to think 'why' you want to add Flash element in your eCommerce page... I personally don't see the reason to add one if it is an animation, but if you are ceating eCommerce page in Flash, that'd be sweet one to develope... :)
