Question

Integrating FLASH Viewer templates to existing movie

Asked by: enetadmin

Hi folks,
This might be easly for the flash gurus, but it would be a huge favor for me if you can help me out.
One of the execs wants a manual (word document, pdf etc) published on our Intranet to be accessible like a virtual book (with page flipping effects, zoom-in, zoom-out etc), similar to http://www.nxtbook.com/fx/books/bnp/wt0705/. After initial research we found that  it is just a Flash movie with a Flash Viewer. This is what we found from our brief study:
a. A program that can convert PDF or Word documents to Flash movies (Macromedia Flash paper and similar tools). But SWF tools was very impressive (http://www.quiss.org/swftools). It is very impressive and the best part is its freewre!. Well, we will eventually buy Macromedia Flash paper.

b. Create OR Buy a FLASH viewer that has the page flipping effects. Now searching through the EE posts and googling for FLASH viewers, I came across a wonderful PAGEFLIPPER flash template : http://www.iparigrafika.hu/pageflip/. But I have no idea on how to use it. I am very novice in Flash, but I have purchased the Macromedia FLASH 2004 and installed it.

Now, can anyone please post the instructions on how to integrate the movie created in step "a" with the pageflipper flash viewer of step "b". OR better yet, can you suggest the best way to accomplish what we are trying to do -- convert an existing PDF brochure into a user-friendly FLASH viewer.

If you look inside the pageflip fla, you will see, in the library, some items called "page1", "page2", "page3", and so on. Double click on each item, and you will enter the editing mode. Once "inside" the movieclip, go to menu "File/Import", and import a one page pdf. Adjusting it's size, you will get the new page.

Hi Negatyve (sounds very positive) :),
I am a novice user so I would require a bit more complete instructions. Well, after the file/import how do i view the completed movie? I have a 2-page PDF that was converted into SWF format. Can you post further instructions after the file/import? In the meanwhile, let me get started on your instructions.

First, you should start to find yourself confident with the tool: to export a movie, and test it, press Ctrl + Enter. Now, import the pdf inside one page (dig for the symbol called "page2", for example, in the library, double click it, go to File/import, choose the pdf, press ok), and then test the movie again, and see what happened.

Hi Negatyve,
I tried your instructions -- everytime I click on "page2" in the library and go to File/Import and then choose the PDF file (with just one page), it gives me the options (whether to flatten the frames etc..etc..) I just let the defaults take over and after clicking on OK it just pops up the progress dialog but nothing happens. It just sits there as if waiting for something.
Am I missing something here? It seems to be freezing the software. I have to eventually kill the process.

Could you show me your pdf to see if the problem is with that document? Have you tried with other pdf?

Hi Negatyve,
You might be correct, I tried it with other PDF in a completely blank .fla document and it did import the file properly and created scenes out of the PDF documents. Now, let me go back to your earlier posting and see how I can incorporate a PDF page and replace the page2,page3,page4....page10 with the content I have. I might need more help with this actionscript and Flash. I would really appreciate your patience in walking me through the steps.
Will try your advice and post back.

:) WOW, when I tried to import a PDF file (just page 1 of 10) it imported the text of the file and overlayed it on top of the hardcover. Then I hit Ctrl-Enter and there it was :) perfectly placed. Now I will do it using the Page3 and see how it goes. Can you now tell me how to import all of the PDF pages? Btw, when I click on Page 2 in the symbol definitions (Actions view pane), the "import to stage" is greyed out and I only get "import to library" and "open external library" option. If I go through the "library view" and double click on Page 2, I get the option for import to stage. I did it through "import to stage" while in "page2".
Now one thing I noticed is the size. How do I change it? The text from the imported PDF went beyond the book size. I know this might be really a dumb question, but please be patient -- as I am just a beginner in FLASH.

When you are editing a page, look at the timeline panel, and you will see a layer with the previous content. If you click the icon with the + sign on the left, you will add a new layer. Once a new layer is created, select the newly created frame, then do the import process. Now, lock the first layer, clicking on the dot corresponding to the lock sign (just like photoshop). Then right click on the stage, then choose "select all". Once everything's selected, press the "Q" key, and you will see the resize handles..

Hi Negatyve,
Thanks for the tips. I am able to resize it as per your advice. But now, I am trying to get the things working with pageflipv2.13 code. Did you have a chance to look at the source code? Perhaps you might have an idea of how to increase the page size! I did the following.
a. Opened the pageflipv213.fla document and then opened the "library" (ctrl+L).
b. Double clicked on page1 and it opened it in editing mode.
c. Deleted the word PageFlip and then did an "import to stage" operation and selected "page 1 of 1".
d. It imported the text properly and I was able to resize it to the dimensions. Tested the movie and it works fine.
e. Went back and tried to resize Page1 --- and as soon as I do that, the hardcover doesn't turn at all.

Is there something more than resizing? Perhaps something to be changed in the actionscript? Plus I am trying to now understand the Actionscript instructions a little bit (from the comments in Actionscript ..like adding new pages etc...but this seems to be a tedios process, as I have to keep doing this "add page" thing for all 52 pages!). Do you know of some tool that can automatically do this? I came across this component from http://www.flippingbook.com/. But I am not sure if it does the PDF (with hyperlinks) document!.

Can you please advice on how to resize the pages for pageflipv213.fla ?

>Is there something more than resizing? Perhaps something to be changed in the actionscript?

Yep. You have to select the frame 5 of the main timeline where you see the little "a" symbol, and open the action panel. Quite at the beginning, you'll see these actions:

pw = 300;                  //page width in pixel
ph = 400;                  //page height in pixel

About the dinamyc loading, surely this " http://www.flippingbook.com/" won't load your external pdf, but if you convert them to swf, I would say "yes".
