Dynamic Zoom Imaging

Hello,

I'm researching how such software like google maps work. My company is interested in implementing their own form of that for displaying pictures for a shopping cart. I've seen this implemented at alot of places, and we want to get ahead of the game.

I tried finding articles on the web and can't seem to find anything. So what I'm asking you for, is resources, sample codes if you have any, logical explanations of how the technology works. Ect ect. At first I thought it was flash but apparently I was wrong.

The best idea I could come up with myself, was that you give a particular peice of software an extremely high res image. It takes the image, resizes it to the size you want at a low res for download speeds. Then it breaks the rest of the image into squares of various resolutions. Then as you zoom in it loads the appropriate squares for the appropriate sizes.
