I embeded a flash banner into a dreamweaver website. How do I make it available to start and stop this banner - for instance, if someone has dial-up and doesn't want the flash thing going, how could they stop it?

hi, if you're concerned about the dial up ppl, i'd do it the other way round. provide a static image and then have the option to load/play the banner if they choose.
if you put a flash banner with the static image and the animation and a link to play a frame, the file size is still going to be the same for download.

Agree with Blue-genie, Download size will be the same,
but you can control the movie like this:
in the .fla add
ExternalInterface.addCallb
function stopMovie(){
stop();
}
then in your html add:
<script>
var oSwf = new Object();
window.onload = function(){
oSwf = document.getElementById('o
</script>
and inside teh <object tag give it the id :
<object ........ id="oSwf">
and the link to stop movie
<a href="#" onclick="oSwf.stopMovie();

No, it won't
that will load the whole movie, and stop playing it when they click the link.
By then, it's already too late, as the movie has already loaded.

insert an image. Yes, an image NOT a flash object.
just add an image link:
<a href="#" onclick="loadMovie();" id='flashPreview'><img src="flash_preview.gif" alt='flash preview' /></a>
When you click the movie, it starts a javascript function loadMovie().
this loadMovie function will have to replace the link (defined with the tag flashPreview) with the <object tag> for your flash movie/banner.

just provide a html link "skip flash" then link to the next page or a static version
