I have been able to find only very miniaml infomration on this with extensive time spent on google and tech net as well as reaching out to several colleauges.
I have a WMV file that I need to convert to FLV. I used the same settings to convert the file that I had weeks before with a video from the same vendor (don't worry, licensed to use, edit, and redistribute) using Flash Video Encoder. The first file worked fine. The second one converted audio and the entire 20 minutes of video stayed static on the first frame. I tired using Riva Encoder, which errors out.
When I try opening the file in VLC, I get the following error:
VLC does not support the audio of video format "MSS2"> Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.
(Love the error message by the way)
After much research online what I can glean inidcates that this was a default encoding with Windows Media Encoder 9.
Can anyone offer suggestions of a tool that would work or additional CODEC that couuld be installed to fix this?

Have you tried using Windows Media Encoder? MSS2 is only the default encoder for certain types of recordings (live broadcasts, screen captures), so its "Convert a File" option should allow you to not only open that WMV but save it to a new WMV using "normal" encoding methods.

try testing this video first using Gspot, since it's WMV there maybe imbedded drm or some strange headers. Knowing this may assist you to find what differs.
Gpsot can tell what you need what codecs were used and if you have them on this system,
Gspot can also troubleshoot the video using the Proposed codecs solutions and Tests i use it for audio as well.

We could probably help more if you provided more info about how the solutions didn't work. That could mean just about anything.
Were you able to download and install Windows Media Encoder? (Note that this is not the same thing as Windows Media Player.) Did you find the Convert File option? If so, what settings did you use? Were you able to convert your original file to a new file? If so, do you get the same error message with the new file or a different error message?
