Question

Flash 5 limitations

Asked by: superchief

I appreciate that i am using a very old version of flash and that some people might say it is time to upgrade. Well unfortunatly for me the only legal copy of flash that i have is flash 5 and so i am fairly limited on what i can do with sites.
However i am determined to create a great website using flash 5.
So my question really is this. I have a site which i am extreemly inspired by (as i am a musician) http://www.deadmau5.com/.
Looking at this site i can see a lot of things (that i can do the hard way) that i can do in flash 5 and possibly some things that i can't.
For all you flash guru's out there, what on this site is possible for me to do in flash 5 and what isn't. Using the web page above as a template.

I appreciate that this is a bit of a broad question, so i perhaps i should narrow this down a little.
The auto resizing thing that the movie does is very sleek and something that looks quite good. It all seems to be done in flash and i am not sure if this is a flash 5 thing or not. Infact that is one thing i am very keen on. I could do some sort of HTML, CSS and flash trickery in flash 5 if this is not possible but i am not so keen on that.

The dynamic content. Now i know this can be loaded from a text file in flash 5 and the possible solution to that would be to just have a server side file that simply accesses the database and then outputs html text or plain text so this isn't so much of an issue i do not think.

The music player, could this be done by putting my mp3's in a seperate swf file and then dynamically loading them in? I am sure i did this in the past with flash 5.

Now even if you can do all these things with flash 5 am i going to experience a huge file size?

I know everyone will be saying that upgrading would be the best option but unfortunatly i am on somewhat of a budget...this budget consisting of no money. Any help / suggestions / tips would be good.

I am already creating simple animations with flash but i am just getting back into it after a few years away from flash.

Well i have learnt how to do the sizing / scaling thing but one question remains. When i have a movie that has objects in, upon resizing the movie all objects resize accordingly. How do i stop them from resizing? I may discover the anser for myself in due course but if anyone knows in the mean time that would be great

I think everything is doable in Flash 5 except the FLV support...  You could prepare a SWF out of FLV and use it instead though (just like your MP3 idea)...

I don't understand the resizing bit though...  I don't recall Flash 5 supporting stage resizing...  Can you be abit more specific on how you are doing and what's not working???

Well what i have done is created just a quick movie and set the embedded object to width 100% height 100%. This olbviosly scales all the objects up as expected. However what would be great is if when the movie is scaled up to fit the size i specify, if the objects inside the movie could remain the same size but position themselves relative to how everything has been resized. If you go to the www.deadmau5.com website and size the browser window up/ down you'll see what i mean. The objects don't resize, the just re-position themselves, much like a website would.

i appreciate that flash 5 may not be able to do this and this is a new feature of the much newer versions and as such if this is not possible i will sacrifice this and do a mixture of HTML/CSS and flash to fit my needs.

Superchief, I agree with CyanBlue and would like to add that you might have an issue with text being sharp. There was a change to the way Flash anti-aliases starting with 8. Being on a budget, you might want to look at all of the already developed goodies for Jquery. Jquery is a lightweight javascript library that makes many cool things happen. It's free. http://jquery.com/

The http://www.deadmau5.com/ sight is tight.

THe issue with the text, would this be there if i set a specific size for the movie and stuck with that?

(These are the times i wish i had the money for the new flash)

I don't really have much faith on my memory, but I believe that's just the way it is with Flash 5 or 6 where basically there is no capability to listen for size change hence you won't be able to resize/move items accordingly when you change the stage size...

As for the text, general rule of thumb apply to all the versions of Flash...  Make sure that the textField is not scaled, placed in the integer value for x and y location and use the font that are not funky which should prevent at least 80% of the problematic cases...
