Browse All TopicsI purchased a generic graphics card, based on the S3 Virge 375 chipset. The unit works great in Windows 3.1, but is having some problems in DOS (v6.22) with certain applications. In certain modes, all text information is garbled by it's inability to display the font needed. It has the exact same problem as an older Cirrus Logic chipset card, and which their manual describes as:
"Some DOS application programs bypass the BIOS and directly draw characters to the screen. Programs which directly draw characters using the 8x14 font from the BIOS will appear to be writing incorrect data to the screen. Typically this occurs in programs which offer a selection
to use a graphics 25 or 34 line display mode."
Cirrus Logic supplies a dos TSR driver, called TSRFONT.COM, to supply these programs with a suitable font fixing the problem. My new S3 Virge card seems to have the exact same problem, is there a driver available to fix this ??

A page was listed, but no comment made as to which of the 10 applications found there were appropriate. I downloaded all that sounded appropriate - none fixed the problem. Closest one made reference to font problems in WIN95 - which I don't use. This is a straight DOS (6.22) system, I use no VESA extensions. Only in Quattro Pro, wysiwyg mode, do I have the problem where the font is not able to be displayed. If I display in 80x25 mode, the fonts appear fine.
Before start DOS applications, which making garbled text you must run Univbe tsr program for correct VESA-modes working.
Univbe programm you can get there:
