Depends on what mail program you are using.
If you are using eudora pro. Make sure the way attachments are sent is sent as mime. Or if you prefer uuencode like i do make sure you tell the user it's uuencoded and how to decode it.
Normally though it tends to be on the senders end as you have probably sent it in non mime format. Course this doesn;t excuse AOL's inability to support binhex or uuencode. They should decode those as well. but what are we to do.

PKZIP the file(s), then attach the ZIP file to the e-mail. THEN they should be able to open it correctly.
