Illustrator files are PDF files. Any program that can open PDF files should be able to open Illustrator files without a problem. I assume you mean the strokes by "lines".

Anytime the image is exported all i get is the fill colours and not any of the lines in the image. If anyone knows how to get around this problem your help is appreciated.

Please give us a little more information:
Are you running this on a MAC or PC?
What version of Illustrator?
What file type are you exporting?
What program are you viewing the exported file with?
I have tried to get this to happen with Illustrator 9.0.2 and about a half a dozen different programs, and about a half a dozen file formats, but all works OK.
I have exported a ton of files from Illustrator in quite a few fomats with 100% success, so I am very interested in what is causing this.

sorry, just got back to woork today...
I'm trying to export them into MS Visio.
What I mean by stroke lines are just any lines in Illistrator.
Here's a screen shot of what's happening....

The fact that youre going to MS Visio kinda says it all. From the screenshot its very aparrent that visio has more problems reading illy 8 than just ditching strokes. It butchered the gradient in the magnifying glass and even added a band of red. I have no idea where that came from. Try exporting from Illy 8 as some other format and see what visio does with it.
Mr. Big Scythe,
Have you tried exporting from Illustrator as a WMF or EMF? (Not formats I'd usually recommend, but they are Microsoft's vector formats, so it might be worth a try)
If that doesn't work, do you need it to keep it vector in Visio? Or could exporting to a PNG or BMP image from Illustrator to bring into Visio work for you?
BTW, I've experienced the reverse problem a lot - clients send me PDF files they create in Visio, and Acrobat won't even open them correctly until AFTER I open and resave in Illustrator. Like the others already said, Visio's apparently full o' quirks.

What do you mean by export? i.e. Are you selecting, then copying and pasting into your other program OR are you using the save as command to create an Illustrator eps file OR are you using the export command to create other document formats? I'd recommend saving as an Illustrator eps and then either opening or importing this file into whatever program you what. Also, what program do you want to get this image into?
