There are programs that save .ico files from various formats but if the programmer just wants a gif/jpg/png, why not give them one? The reason youre getting jaggy edges on a transparent gif is because it has varying levels of transparency and GIF only supports one level. Use PNG instead which supports 256 levels of transparency.

I think it would be a better approach to creat seperate icons for the dark and light backgrounds without bothering about the transparency. Instead use the exact color as the background...produce a bmp and rename the extension to ico...and you have a nice crisp icon file ready.

It sounds like you have nice anti-aliased edges on your icon image.  This is not possible with Windows icons. There is no way to do an alpha channel on a desktop icon and have the edges look smooth.

The best thing you can do, is to edit the edges of the image by hand, pixel by pixel.  If the image has a black outline for example, make sure the pixels on the edges of the outline are only one color, black.

Look at some existing icons and see how their edges are.  They use only one color, not varying degrees of light to dark.  Choosing one color for the icon's edges will make the icon look correct on any background.

One common feature of a dedicated icon editing program such as Microangelo, is that while you're drawing your icon, they give you a preview of what the icons will look like on a white background, a gray background, and a black background.

You can convert the file formats to a .ico format using GifMovieGear from www.moviegear.com it works really well and is very reliable. It will also do the reverse and convert .ico in to those file formats (among others).

It is not of much relevance whether the icon file is jpeg or a bmp or a ico, it ultimately is expanded to bitmap while display. I sincerely feel that if its not a priority requirement to have a single file cater to multiple backgrounds, one should go for different icon files with suitable bakgrounds. Anyway a png which suports 256 levels of transparency is not going to be any lighter than a bmp or a ico file and it still can not match the crispness of a a .ico file saved with that specific background.
