Question

Best JPEG Compressor

Asked by: vdhant

Hi eveyone

I am setting up a website to display photos on and i am haveing a bit of trouble getting the size of my photos down. I am currently using Photoshop to resize and save the pics as jpeg (the quality at 5 and the format option baseline) and the average size of the photo is 25kb - 30kb, for a 160px by 140px photo.

Previously i was displaying the pics at http://www.pbase.com/snoopy42 and for the same size photo (i.e 160px by 140px) the average size that they compressed the photos at was 3kb - 7kb (note at this website u submit the phots ame they compress them).

Now as u can see the size they could compress the same photo with the same quality at a quater of the size that i could. So does anyone know of a better compressing product they might be using (i did ask but got no responce) or another product that could preduce the same results.

Thasnks ant.

JPEG is JPEG is JPEG. It's not like video codecs where you get significantly better compression out of one versus another. The size of a JPEG can vary depending on what is contained in the image, or if it's Progressive, has an ICC profile embedded, used an alpha channel to change compression level for different parts of the image.

To get a JPEG down to 3-7K you're either HEAVILY compressing the JPEG, or using some other format. GIF perhaps?

Looking at the images on the site you posted, i'm seeing 640x480 images, pretty decent quality, at ~46k. That's pretty reasonable.

Hi,

There is a JPEG Compressor which is capable to compress the images by maintaining the quality of images too. Its from Dreamscape Softwares and is available at :

            http://www.dreamscapesoftware.com/products/soft_jpeg.html

I have personally tried it and saw that it reduces the file size at a great extent.

You can find various such tools at :

          http://wantdbest.com/freebies/graphtools.html

Do let me know if it solves your problem. Just reply me at dhayfule@indiatimes.com or dhayfule@yahoo.com.

Bye
Regards

dhayfule: by posting an email address not only are you opening yourself up to bucketloads of spam (This question is likely to appear in a google search) but you're taking discussion of this question off the EE boards. Doesn't do anyone looking at this question later any good.

I dont know where you're seeing 10k jpegs on the site you posted. I'm seeing 640x480 images between 40k and 70k. The THUMBNAILS are quite a bit smaller, ~4-6k. I was able to take one of the 640x480 images and "Save For Web" in photoshop and get the images down to 160x120 at 4k, same quality as the thumbnail provided for that image. Just gotta drop the compression down, dont make it Progressive, and dont embed an ICC Profile.

Hi
The example that i am using is for the THUMBNAILS. But i am also after the equivilent compression of the large photos (40kb - 80kb as u have said). I have just tryied "Save For Web" in photoshop and the results are what i after. Just one thing though if i am saving the photos as JPEG's, is 30 for quality preaty standard or is it beter to go higher or lower.
Thanks Ant

The quality slider setting TOTALLY depends on the size of the image, the content of the image, and the desired output. You can get away with ALOT of compression in an image that is completely white...The content matters. Youll want to adjust each photo individually for best quality to size ratio.
