The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

The rounded corners are just an illusion, of course. The image is still actually square-cornered.  The 2 ways to do it manually are to make the radiused-off portion transparent, or make it match the background color[s]. If the background is not made of solid colors, the latter method will be quite obvious.
There are also plugin filters for PhotoShop and Paint Shop Pro et al that can apply that effect to images.

If this is for the web, know that the web can only show rectangular images (without some tricky javascript to draw rounded corners)

That means that almost all of those tricky images with the rounded corners that you see on web sites are actually rectangular images with square corners.

huh?

They either make the square part of the corner the same color as the background so that you cant see it, or they make it transparent and save it as a gif or a png file and hope the person viewing it has an updated browser that makes transparent pngs transparent.

Here is a tutorial on how to make a rounded corner jpeg in Fireworks.

A transparent png or gif is very much the same except you make the background transparent and then save as either a png of gif

In addition to the advice about saving the picture in PNG or GIF format, I'll give you advice how to make rounded corners in GIMP:

1. start without selection or with one selected rectangle (e.g. the whole picture)
2. menu Select, then Rounded Rectangle; choose radius;
   choose OK

Then, do what you want:
- copy the selected area and paste where you want ... or ...
- invert the selection (Select > Invert), then delete it or cut or do what you want with corners (e.g.paint with your background color) ... or ...
- if you want transparent background, your picture must have alpha channel, i.e.:
   1. choose Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha channel
   2. cut the corners now.

At the end, one warning: Internet Explorer 6 and earlier browsers don't behave good when the see PNG with transparency. I would fill the corners with the color of the background of my web page :-((

effort 1 )

Hi ... still trying to get this in fireworks MX

Tried this tutorial

http://www.joycejevans.com/tutorials/Fireworks/FWMX/roundecorners/rc_crn.htm

Email to the author of the tutorial:
Im using MX and have done for many years, no expert but good enough.

Im trying to do as you say and it doesnt work   I select the picture then ctrl X to cut it gone ok.  Next I select the box with no fill that I created earlier thats in another layer and paste.

It simply lands on top of the curved box exactly as it was before no change to the pic.

 effort 2)

http://www.cbtcafe.com/fireworks/roundedcorners/roundedcorners.html

The pic simply disappears

I really dont want to use another ap to get this.  Have to crack this in the next few hours.

Any help appreciated.

Gimp would load so I loaded an old copy of photoshop and it was dead easy

This really isn't in the spirit of EE. There was a question asked and three reasonable answers given. If the questioner will reread the FAQ he will see that the goal is to reward the effort made by volunteers by selecting the best answer (or answers), not necessarily hold out for the answer they want to hear.
But, insomuch as the asker was not able to get the offered solutions to work, and that he did find his own solution and posted it here, I won't object to a refund if no one else does.

I thought the author just picked their own answer as the solution... I didn't realize they had to request it then be manually closed, too.

04.24.2008 at 08:56PM PDT, ID: 21436979

"not necessarily hold out for the answer they want to hear"
> People search for answers on this site - whats the point flagging answers that dont work?

I really appreciate the efforts made BUT do you want me to award points
for the "wrong" answer?  None worked for me.  It could be me, but may be down to the version of Fireworks MX I have etc.

I think this site is great, again, I really really appreciate all the help - nothing personal.

I apologize - you caught me in a sour mood.

I have had a run lately of people asking questions, then abandoning them, then asking for a refund because they could not understand any of the answers. Several have posted links to solutions that they found on their own when the links had actually been offered by others as possible solutions earlier on.

I should have taken a brief moment to look at your profile and see the rich history that you have of asking questions (495 of them) and dealing fairly with "experts"

Again I apologize and I also apologize to the mod who now has to open this case and read these posts because I made a challenge.

> to Darr247

Picking their own solution is the new automated way of refunding points without having to put a separate request. EE sends out an automatic notice and if people like me sit on their hands and keep quite, it all goes through quickly and automaticly.

Since I made a post, the system has to be handled by a moderator.

In which step of my answer do you have problems?

Bruno

"Gimp would load"  in windows for me   ------ meant to say wouldNT load - sorry.

I download it and ran it and got some error after install - rebooted tried again - same
(It was 3am and I had to meet the client today, not time to post exact errors sorry)

Gimp is a Linux program...  were you running it in a virtual machine?

I believe that this is the point I was trying to make. The fact that you could not get Gimp to download did not mean that brundo's answer was not the correct solution for your problem.

It's like ordering a special cooked meal at a restaurant and then saying "I wasn't too hungry, I'm not going to pay"

04.25.2008 at 11:03AM PDT, ID: 21441892
Worded,

did you download the right version?

The right one you can get from the page http://www.gimp.org/downloads/, under "Download GIMP 2.4.5 Installer for Windows 2000 and above".

I am running GIMP on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 (with students, via Remote desktops), on Windows Vista (!) and on Ubuntu Linux. GIMP works on all those systems without problems. Installation was easy on all Windows systems, and in installation for Ubuntu Linux GIMP was included.

Was the problem with the installation file? If not, could you send us a message you get the errors? A screenshot?

Again thanks to everyone who replied but I have the answer and its Photoshop and it worked easily for me first time, no problem.

You can accept one of your answers where you gave the solution, worded... whether the points are refunded or not should be irrelevant - premium members are supposed to get unlimited points to use for asking questions.
