The gradient is already done. It's being able to show that depth (as if the letter's a physical structure), and that the light is hitting it on the side. It's being able to show different colors to the "side" of the letter.
Any help is appreciated.

Hi MyersA,
What software do you use currently? Photoshop CS4 Extended has a 3D rendering built-in. Illustrator is even better for 3D objects. Here's a tutorial on 3D lettering through Illustrator.
You could also pick up something like Swift3D for quickly rendering 3D objects and animations and then exporting to static image or dynamic Flash formats.
I hope this helps.
Thanks for the post.
I'm using Fireworks CS3.
The link you posted doesn't actually give text any 'height'... it's basically adding a shadow to the object.
I wanted the text to look like a 'structure' that has solid sides (like a cube). If you notice in the PNG I posted, the sides of the letters have different colors.
Oops, I didn't see the 'fireworks' in your tags. The tutorial statler provided shows some depth effects, but Fireworks won't do true 3D depth effects like what you have in your 'g' example. You'd still need some specialized 3D software like what I provided.
It may be overkill as far as modeling complexity goes, but you could also try something like Blender or POV-Ray which are open-source. Here are more free 3D software packages.
Sometimes a third party tool that specializes might be worth a look.
While I like using Photoshop, Gimp and Ulead Photo impact, for simplicity in creating cool text, I like
having 3D text Commander handy.
Not sure if it will do all that need it too, but you might want to check it out.

I don't know if Gimp has layer styles like Photoshop, if so you should be able to do this with a layer style.
Otherwise duplicate your text on a new layer, put it below your original text, drag it a bit up and to the right, and adjust the brightness and contrast so it's white. This will be more of a white drop shadow, so you'll need to do some erasing, and then add in some shading to get it right.
