Question

Symantec Endpoint 11 causes file sharing failure on Windows OS...Vista and XP both exhibit this same issue.

Asked by: Captain_Scourge

After installing this application, and disabling the firewall, and turning on file sharing for all network cards, I still cannot share files consistently.  Most the time it doesn't work at all.  Why why why?  It is driving me crazy.  Also if you disable Network Protection Component completely it cycles itself back on upon reboot and once more the problem exists.  While it is disabled, file sharing works perfect however.  If there was just a way to make it off permanently.  Or any other way would be fine.  Please let me know.   -- Brandon

Is the client End Point install with Network Thereat Protection?

If yes, you may need to update the Firewall rules in there. likes allow any sauces to any destination with any port or protocols.

Hope this will helps.

Is there anyone out there that could give me a detailed example of how to set up the firewall to allow all traffic on the network.  I think I did that. But I am fairly new to programming firewalls.  IF someone has done this for this particular application, Symantec Client Endpoint protection with Network Threat Protection that would be most helpful.  Please advise, and thanks...

Double click on the End Point Protection,
are you able to see a Name called " Network Thereat Protection"
- Under the Network Thereat Protection, on right hand site there is a function call "Option"
- Click on Configure Firewall rules
- Choose Add  (source: Any ; Destination: Any ; Protocol:Any)
- Action : Allow

Please keep suggestions coming if you have experience with this issue with this application.  I am pretty sure, cavinlim, that I did what you are suggesting with no success... There is another question posted on this site, that talks about this issue.  It, however, has to do with a server 2003/client side application whereas this is just client endpoint protection.  And to answer the question, yes, there is definitely a "Network Threat Protection" module as you said.  Is there any way to NOT INSTALL the Network Threat portion of this application that you know of?  It just jacks everything up.  Once again, I've already done what you are suggesting, but I want to try it further...maybe I did something wrong...but I'm pretty sure I did it right.  I would sure love the ability just to turn that module OFF? ugg...

For starters, what version of SEP are you using? The symptoms you're describing were very apparent in pre-MR1. The current version available is 11.0.2020.56 (MP2 for MR2). I'd recommend upgrading to this version, if you're not using it now, before any other troubleshooting.

by: Captain_ScourgePosted on 2008-08-31 at 21:10:57ID: 22357456

okay the version we are using after installation and update is 11.0.780.1109
which is way old compared to that one you are mentioning.  Do you know if this version is MR1?  Looks to me like it may be.  Please advise, and thanks...

by: jmlambPosted on 2008-09-01 at 06:22:59ID: 22359920

Unfortunately no, that is pre-MR1. Definitely issues in that version. MR1 will be 11.0.1000.XX. At least we know the root cause now.

Upgrading should be reasonably straight-forward.

1. Obtain MR1.
2. Upgrade SEPM first (reboot).
3. Upgrade your SEP clients by deploying the MR1 package. At this point you can remove or add features. I would recommend not using the Firewall for now. PTP is also not supported on servers. Use the AV/AS feature only there.

You can use the Monitors>>Logs area in SEPM to report on which clients have received the upgrade and which are still pending. Another indicator will be on your Home tab. In the Status Summary section you'll notice the number of Restart Required increasing.

The steps above are the "short" version. If you need something more indepth, let me know. The deployment guide is a good reference to use however.

Thanks, I am sure this is the answer.  I will obtain MR1 and upgrade my clients without Network Protection.  Take care, :o)
