The error could conceivably be caused by a virus, or by Malware.

Unless you're sure the machine is absolutely clean i recommend downloading, then updating Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:

When updated, reboot into Safe Mode by selecting F8 at bootup & run a scan.

Thanks for everyone's responses. To greyknight17: When I go to services.msc and right click on LckFldService, All Tasks has the options "Start/Stop/Pause/Resume/Restart" but they are all faded and I can't choose them. Startup Type is "Automatic"; Status is "Starting". When I go to Properties, the only thing I see that I can change is Startup type -- I can change it from "Automatic" to "Manual" or "Disabled." What do you think -- should I try Disabiling? Then that would make the whole program unsable, right? Second, the way the software works is when a file or folder is locked, the name is changed. The folder at question is named Account but when locked, it is named Accout.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}. When you click on the folder, all the files look like what is in the Control Panel. So even if I disable the software in services, I might not be able to rename the file. Not sure what to do here.

I went to Jonvee's link and read the 75 information, it makes sense but doesn't help me find a solution, i.e. I am getting the error message telling me I can't access that folder because another program blocking access to it. That is what Folder Access is supposed to do but my problem is now Folder Access isn't functioning properly -- for this one locked folder -- and won't allow me to unlock it.

I have Trend Micro PC-cillin which actively scans my computer for viruses but I can do some more virus scanning to see if that might help.

Yes, a scan for both viruses and Malware would be prudent.  There is no AV scanner that can guarantee detecting & removing an infection.

Recommend you start with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

Could also be due to a corrupted file.  You could try the System File Checker>
Start>Run       .. and then type SFC /scannow

Well, I have been doing maintenance on my computer as suggested. I downloaded and ran the Anti-Malware software. I ran SFC /scannow. That ran smoothly without any problems (thank goodness, the info about it in the link scared me.)

I didn't save the installation file for Folder Access and searched for it. I only found ver. 2.1 (I have 2.0 and the link Jonvee sent me everyone talked about 2.0). But in any event I thought I'd take a chance and uninstall 2.0 and install 2.1 in hopes the suggested fix would work.

But now I have a new problem. I can't uninstall  and am getting "There are folders still in the application list. Please remove them before Uninstalling." This is because there is a folder listed in Folder Access which I was protecting which no longer exists. It was on one of my external drives and that drive doesn't work anymore (!). When I try to remove the folder I get a new error message "Error Main : cmdRemoveFolder : 52 : Bad file name or number".  @($&#^*!@!

What now?

P.S. I'm not sure why Jonvee is suggesting to download HSLAB Folder Access.

It's good that you have no other corrupted files, as checked by by "SFC /scannow", and when you have some spare time to checkout that link, you'll find it's excellent.

If the folder(s) still in the application list & if it's of no value, we somehow need a way of removing it.

Did you try renaming this locked folder, as greynight17 suggested?

Have been presuming until now that to your knowledge there is nothing of value in this locked folder.  
If this is correct, see if this previous thread helps.  It lists several tools suitable for deleting stubborn files >

So another option is to use Process Explorer(free) which can identify the process that appears to be locking your file.  You should be able to identify the file "handles" of your locked file.

Hi. The whole point of my trying to solve this problem was to recover that folder. However, since you raised the issue, I have thought it over and have since decided much of the info in it I have recreated and I'm just going to call what I haven't been able to recreate an acceptable loss. I now just want to clean everything up by deleting the folder, uninstalling Folder Access and find another utility like it that is more reliable (if you have suggestions, great).

That being said, I was able to delete that folder. (Thanks) Now my main problem is that I can't uninstall Folder Access due to the issue I told you about earlier with another folder listed in the application which WAS on an external drive that I am having problems accessing. See my post 02.28.09 at 9:36 pm.

Wondering if all along your machine has been infected, and that this is the reason for the file problem.
You could see if File LckFldService.exe is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32.

I do have that file LckFldService.exe.The link you sent me has several people with different opinions about whether the file is malicious or not. That site took me to Registry Booster which I downloaded and scanned my computer. It found over 2000 registry errors find which scares me and I'm not sure I want to do anything to fix so many "errors". What is your advice?

I am wondering whether we should continue to pursue anything else at this point since my original goal of recovering that folder is now moot. I don't want to waste your time. I wouldn't be surprised if my system is affected by something as there have been a handful of issues I've recently been experiencing -- none disasterous -- yet. I have scanned my system for viruses and malware. I await your advice about the registry cleaning.

On Folder Access, I may just try to install 2.1 over 2.0 and see what happens. If it doesn't work, I will probably just stop using that application, leave it on my computer if I can't uninstalled and move on. Thanks for all your support and help in the meantime.

Instinct says do *not* correct the registry errors that Registry Booster apparantly detected.   It's difficult to see how you could have > 2000 of them!

But i ~would~ recommend running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and Kaspersky, if you have time.  These two, (& 'Trend Micro' ) are certainly safe.

You scanned your system for viruses and malware, but i wonder if you tried any of these three?  If not, they're well worth trying.  
And you're not wasting anybodys' time, i just wish we could have nailed the folder problem.

Presume you have tried to uninstall 2.0 using >
Start>Settings>Control panel>Add/Remove programs?

Hi Jonvee, I'm back. I scanned my computer with Anti-Malware twice, Trend Micro once and Kaspersky once (which took over 13 hours!). Only Kaspersky came up with some problems and they were 3 files that existed on my external hard drive which I don't use anymore. I deleted those files and will at some point do another scan to see what happens.

I installed the new 2.1 version of Folder Access and it looks like it installed over the old version 2.0 which I could not uninstall before (there isn't both a 2.1 and 2.0 folder in the programs folder). The folder I couldn't get rid of is now gone off Folder Access' list within the software. I probably should have tried this first before deleting the folder I was trying to recover but c'est la vie. Interestingly enough, when I was checking to see if the new install installed over the old version, I went to Add and Remove Programs and both versions were listed. When I tried to uninstall the old version 2.0, the window that popped up was going to uninstall the new version 2.1 so I didn't go through with it. When I went to see what would happen if I tried to uninstall the newer version 2.1, the message I get is "An error occurred while trying to remove Folder Access 2.1. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove Folder Access 2.1 from the Add or Remove Programs list?" I said no because who knows what would happen.

Unless you think I should do anything else, I think you have helped me all you can. So thanks for all your time and help. I'll wait for your response before accepting your solution and closing this out. Thanks again.
