Well, I am very surprised that I couldn't find a solution to this problem myself. I used to buy EdgeTech flash drives (last I got was the 16GB) and it came with a simple application. Without executing it and typing the password the partition with the data was not visible. The latest 32 GB has a bogus encrypting software that crashes and even the full version that I paid for doesn't work.
I have spent hours online trying to find a reliable solution. I rather not go encrypting because those take forever (I have now 9GB data) to work with. Besides, I have tried a number of different ones and they all failed or were too slow (fortunately I tried them on a spare flash drive). Some in fact requires a software installed in the computer which is a joke. Portability is one of the advantages using flash drives.... Never mind that in a corporate or government environment you cannot just go ahead and install random programs...
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a reliable way of protecting a flash drive which is:
1. fast
2. possibly NOT encryption based but rather a simple password protection
3. portable and runs off of the drive and doesn't require installation on the computer (well, the first time is ok to set things up)
I do understand that a simple password protection leaves the data unchanged and can be circumvented but be honest, what are the odds that someone finds the drive knowing how to go about it... it is a matter of trade off between convenience and absolute security...
