How can I apply color coding to sharepoint lists

I am using WSS v3 and I wish to add visual indicators to my sharepoint lists.

I have found a web site http://pathtosharepoint.wordpress.com/category/the-html-calculated-column/
which suggests that you can "Visualize Information in SharePoint is the theme of my next online workshop, scheduled on November 3rd. In this entry level session, well see how color coding and other effects can be applied to SharePoint lists, using only out of the box features."

What I want to know is is this possible and if so how would you do it?
