Tomcat PermGen space

In the installation guide of the application (Documentum Webtop) that we deployed on tomcat following is mentioned

"If you are using Apache Tomcat go to Properties/Java setting values of the service:
As a starting point, add the following settings:
-XX:MaxPermSize=128m;
-XX:PermSize=64m;
-XX:+CMSPermGenSweepingEnabled
-XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled
"

I do not have Tomcat installed as a service. Can someone please let me know how and where to make these changes if tomcat is not installed as a service.

In <tomcat_home>/bin/catalina.bat, value of JAVA_OPTS and CATALINA_OPTS are the following

set JAVA_OPTS=%JAVA_OPTS% -Djava.util.logging.manager=org.apache.juli.ClassLoaderLogManager -Djava.util.logging.config.file="%CATALINA_BASE%\conf\logging.properties"
 
set CATALINA_OPTS="-Xms512m -Xmx1024m"

 
Are changes required in any of these variables?

Is the following correct

set JAVA_OPTS=%JAVA_OPTS% -Djava.util.logging.manager=org.apache.juli.ClassLoaderLogManager -Djava.util.logging.config.file="%CATALINA_BASE%\conf\logging.properties -XX:MaxPermSize=128m;-XX:PermSize=64m;-XX:+CMSPermGenSweepingEnabled-XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled"

Or do I need to set it in some other way.

you just need to specify the options you want to add. tomcats startup script will add what it needs

set JAVA_OPTS="%JAVA_OPTS% -XX:MaxPermSize=128m -XX:PermSize=64m -XX:+CMSPermGenSweepingEnabled -XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled"

Thanks for replying.

Waht about the remaining entries like "-Djava.util.logging.manager", "-Djava.util.logging.config.file" etc., should I remove them?

I removed the original line and added the following

set JAVA_OPTS="%JAVA_OPTS% -XX:MaxPermSize=128m -XX:PermSize=64m -XX:+CMSPermGenSweepingEnabled -XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled"

Now tomcat doesn't even start.

you shoulkdn't be editting the script
you should be updating the environment of the user that runs tomcat

Now I restored the scrip to the original and created a new environment variable called "JAVA_OPTS" (in Control Panel --> System --> Advanced)and set it's value as

%JAVA_OPTS% -XX:MaxPermSize=128m -XX:PermSize=64m -XX:+CMSPermGenSweepingEnabled -XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled

Again the server does not start.

check your logs for the reason

It could also be a problem with the used Java-VM as -XX-Options are non-standard and thus are different for each VM. And if you provide Tomcat with arguments the VM it uses does not understand, this should result in the server not starting.

It's most likely a syntax issue.

Please post logs here if you'd like additional help.

Lastly, there is a vast amount of information regarding modifying tomcat's parameters available on google. If you have run into an issue after doing a bit of groundwork, please let us know!
