Question

Unable to reach Tomcat management interface via browser

Asked by: omnova

I am unable to reach the Apache Tomcat Manager Web Application through my Internet browser.  The URL for the manager application is:  http://localhost <server name>/manager/html.  When attempting to access the page a prompt appears to login.  When the credentials are entered nothing happens.  The credentials used are associated with the manager role and are contained in the folder $CATALINA_HOME\conf\tomcat-users.xml.

The manager application is run through an IIS web application pool so I insert that into the URL where the localhost is specified.\

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I was having a similar problem a while ago. I just replaced my entire tomcat-users.xml with something I found on the Web. Try using mine but do edit it as necessary. Maybe it might work. Also do remember to restart the server upon completion.

Do you have to restart the physical server just the web server?

by: kingshaPosted on 2009-08-10 at 08:48:29ID: 25061050

Just the webserver (tomcat).

This is on a Windows box and my knowledge of Tomcat is limited.  Can this be accomplished by simply restarting the service?

Thank you for your help!

do this on your command prompt.

$CATALINA_HOME\bin\shutdown

Then do this:

$CATALINA_HOME\bin\startup

The bin just contains tomcat5.exe and tomcat5w.exe.  I can't find the shutdown or startup.

by: kingshaPosted on 2009-08-10 at 11:42:39ID: 25062693

Umm maybe you might have missed it.

Open the Command-Shell (Start » Run: cmd.exe), change to dir C:\.......\Tomcat5\bin...
Then type either:
shutdown.bat (Run file shutdown.bat to shutdown Tomcat)
startup.bat (Run file startup.bat to start Tomcat)

Hope it helps.

Here's a screenshot of what is available in that directory.

Ok. Below is a screenshot of what mine looks like. I really dont understand why yours is like that. The only reason I can think of is that your tomcat was not installed correctly. Maybe some of the more experienced experts can confirm my suspicion. If you have time, try and install the latest tomcat (6.xx) correctly.

I'm not sure if running it through an IIS web app pool has any differences regarding this either.

Thanks, now I know that it may not be fully installed which would explain why it is not working.
