Question

CLOSE_WAIT issue with java.net sockets

Asked by: isreenivas

We are facing CLOSE_WAIT issue when we use java.net socket and ServerSocket. The CLOSE_WAIT ports are keep on increasing when we run the application. We made couple of changes i.e  adding setSoTimeout() and setSoLinger() methods to the code, but no use. I have seen in one of thread in your site, adding TcpTimedWaitDelay to tcpip registry may solve the issue. But microsoft claims this registry entry only TIME_WAIT sockets, not CLOSE_WAIT. I have also attached snippet of code i.e daemon, manager and client file.

afaik there is no way of 'tuning' CLOSE_WAIT in that OS. The problem is almost certainly rogue clients not closing their connection properly

by: isreenivasPosted on 2008-06-06 at 23:15:04ID: 21734435

But I'm closing my socket connections properly. My application and system becoming slow when CLOSE_WAIT are too many. The only way is to restrat the application which is not possible in production environment. My web server is tomcat 5.5 and OS is windows xp or windows 2003.

You're using finally blocks are you?

Can you please post code in the snippet window?

by: CEHJPosted on 2008-06-07 at 00:12:33ID: 21734516

Closing the connection is effectively being made contingent on

>>String msg = inStream.readLine();

in asyncSend. It the above line blocks, then nothing is going to get closed. I would 'count them out and count them in'. Generate a sequence number and log.debug that at the outset and log.debug it on close. Fortunately you're implementing logging properly so that should be easy to implement

I already attached a file in my first post itself.  Pl find CLOSE-WAITProblem.txt. Do you need entire file content?

Sorry - didn't realise that was code. Anyway - i've seen enough for now
