I have run into a situation that is driving me crazy. Yesterday i rebooted our database server and it failed to reboot with ntldr missing. (ctrl+alt Del. to restart) after trying to fix that for hours and getting nowhere with it. I gave up and installed the OS win serv 03. on top of the old installation. I am now back up and can see the old windows folder and the new one and all of my stuff is still there. But now that I am trying to join the domain w/ the oldsrv name I get duplicate name exist. This is due to the other windows partition I think. My question is - What is the best way to fix the old partition with the new so I can go back to the old windows folder
change the boot.ini to point to the other windows installation. probably wont work since you have reinstalled the os. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323427
windows serv 03 was on it. I have tryed all of the ntldr info on the net last night and that did not work. That is when i had to go with an install over top of the old install.
The problem that i am running into now is when i am trying to install the sql server back onto it, i get an error that there is another instance on the server. I can not get it to repair the old copy or unistall it. All of the old programs that were installed were installed on another partition and there was a partition just for the windows. This is on an old dell 4600 server and there is no raid 5.. errrr
I believe that SQL will install a few components into the system partition under program files that may be causing you a problem. take a look and just rename the folder. You also maybe running into a problem with the "default" instance. If SQL is not the first application there may be another instance of SQL installed such as the db for backup exec. you could also create a new named instance of SQL unless you need to use the default instance. you can do this during the installation of SQL.
