I am deploying a server for a school and this is way beyond my usual comfort zone. I want to be able to create profiles so that staff, pupils and administrators have different desktops, user rights, etc. but don't know how to acheive this.
server is running Microsoft windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition Service Pack 2, all terminals are running Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2.
You will need an active directory setup with roaming profiles. This will allow users to move around computers and still have their desktops and settings the way they should be. Also useful is relocating users My Docs folder to a location on the server. If you would like more details on how to achieve this please let me know.
do the terms, active directory, security groups and group policy have any meaning to yourself. Only if tehse are all unknown quantities to yourself you really are going to be going into a world of trouble here and you shoudl enlist some further help.
if your not offe with these terms then you are looking at an exercise in futility
In order to do what you wish to achive you need to set the server up as the domain controller with active directory controllingthe computers you will attach to the domain. You will need to set up a dhcp distribution point to configure the ip range across the machines and within your active directory set up the user accounts, computer accounts and any group policy you wish to apply.
this is without looking at any access to the internet or email
really think you shoudl get some extra knowledge on board before attempting this
Have set up server as domain controller with active directory and dhcp - I am fine up to this point. Knowledge of active directory and how to implement profiles/group policies is my downfall - can you help?
im guessing you are going to be using local profiles as thi smakes things easier?
What types of policies are you implying? do you just want users to have access to ms office programs are you going to beusing teh internet email etc?
the following site has really good list of considerations to make when setting up your network and if you go through it you can usually work out how to apply it using group policy
Check the following site to get you started on group policy set up using the GMC for active directory in 2003
its basically like running gpedit but for your whole domain.
once you have attached computers to your domain and they are showing in computers organisational unit within ad, you can then create seperate OU's which will have different group policies applied and by moving the different computers and users into these ou's you can apply different policies depending on the users
