The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

I bought the book IBM WebSphere Application Server The Complete Reference, by Ron Ben-Natan & Ori Sassson, and I am trying to install the application server from the CD that comes along with it.

I am prompted for a username and password,  login that I was not asked to set up from before nor given anywhere in the documentation. Does anyone know where I might be able to source this information&..or is there a step that I missed?

Are you logged in as Administrator?

04.06.2008 at 06:46AM PDT, ID: 21291734
Well I have gotten pass the username/password part by adding a password to my account setup.  Now the installation reaches the point where the HTTP web server must be installed and throws the error...."You must be a member of the administrators group to continue installation of this product".  Bear in mind I have always been a part of the administrator group, now with a password instead of without one....so I am confused.  The Operating System I am using is Microsoft Windows XP Professional.

If you right click on My Computer
Go to Manage
Expand Local Users and Groups
Open Groups
On the right, Dbl click on Administrators
Is your user name in that group?

Something else you may be able to try, if you know the Admin password, is right click on the install.
Select Run As, and then change from "Current User" to "The Following User"
User Name: ComputerName/Administrator
Password: Admin Password

My username is in that group.

Nevertheless I tried your second suggestion (ie the one using the Administrator login and using 'Run As').

The same error occurred.

To be more specific....it begins 'InstallShield Engine has encountered a problem and needs to close...'. Then it goes into asking whether I want an error report to be sent to Microsoft or not.

Hope that extra bit of detail helps...

I wonder if it may actually want the user to be logged in as Administrator.
Even though your user may have local admin rights, have you tried to actually log onto the Local PC as Administrator to run the install?

04.08.2008 at 04:47AM PDT, ID: 21304162
how do I log on as administrator when I do not have that option on start up?

I know the account is there because I remember setting it up when I installed the Operating System and as I explained to you before, I entered it during the attempted Websphere installation.

But when just entering the system, after a reboot, it is not one of the user accounts that appear as an option.

I remember being asked whether I wanted the administrator account to be an option on the desktop and saying no during the operating system installation.

Now that I want to reverse that I am not sure how.

04.08.2008 at 08:09PM PDT, ID: 21311560
Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>User Accounts
Select the Advanced tab
At the bottom, Under Secure Log on:
Place a check next to "Require users to press Ctl+Alt+Del" to logon

The under "Advanced User management"
Click on Advanced
You should see users and groups on the left.
Click on users, and on the right you should see Administrator
Right click on Administrator and choose properties

Make sure the account isnt disabled, if it is uncheck it.
Apply, the Okay

Restart PC, and you should now be able to log in using Ctl+Alt+Del
You should be able to choose the local pc
You should also be able to insert username of Administrator /password to log in as the administrator on the local pc.

Well I was able to log in as administrator as was suggested,  but the same Installshield error occured.

However, I did note that despite the error, the HTTP Server was running and was able to be accessed via url http://localhost.

Just to make sure I am not faced with future unexpected error as a result of ignoring this one however, I am going to try downloading the server straight from IBMs website, just in case there is something wrong with the actual CD.

If you have any further suggestions I am very open to hearing them.

Thanks.

According to Amazon...

"Book Info
Covers WebSphere 4.0 from start to finish:..."

I would suggest that you not invest too much time working with that version of the product.  It is ancient. :-)

You can download a trial version of 6.1 from developerWorks

http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/
- Select "WebSphere" in the left frame
  => http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/websphere
- In the "Downloads and CDs" section, select "WebSphere Application Server"
- Select the "Try" tab
- Click on the link appropriate for your system (i.e., Linux, or Windows)
