Check the properties of the website in IIS under Directory Security and then Authentication Methods make sure it is set for integrated windows authentication
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsWe are running a web based service desk application which runs on its own windows 2k3 server. When any of our user base clicks on the link (URL) to the application we will intermittently receive a windows authentication request from the server where the service desk application resides. The application is set-up to use windows authentication. Any advice would be greatly received.

Are the users logged on to a domain account where the IIS server resides when this happens?
No session timeout. Server does connect to another resource which also resides on the same domain.
Users are logged into a domain account where the IIS server resides. The IIS is on the same server as the application. It might be worth noting if you cancel the authentication box you can work as normal. But if you navigate to another url within the application it prompts for authentication again.
It is a member of the trusted sites list.
Yes there is a check box. Entering your standard domain credentials and then enter does nothing. The box reappears. If you continuously enter your credentials eventually your domain account will get locked out. You are only able to work on the app if you cancel the authentication. Sorry maybe should have mentioned that.
If your asking we when it started happening i couldnt tell you. And yes there has been many changes to our environment which could have contirbuted the problem...
Yes the app fully works just every action you make you have to cancel the windows authentication box each time... when i say app all it does is lets the user log a ticket through a customer portal, view knowledge base, FAQ, their open calls etc etc.
Do you get the prompt if you log on to the local server? What about with a non-domain account. Try that wil a local user and a local admin. It's always a pain when you've got lots of systems being upgraded all the time. It makes troubleshooting more difficult.
We've got a similar sounding support app from a company called Sorce [sic]. Maybe contact your vendor and see if they have any ideas?
Very embarrassing , here is the resolution...
An image on the site had been added. The image was in folder with restricted permissions, thus the website was asking for authentication not to log onto the site but to view this image. Permissions have since been amended! Thanks everyone for all your help.
heh, nasty.
Just remembered, a couple of recommendations you can tap into to help you troubleshoot these kind of issues, don't know why I didn't suggest them before First is a simple add-on for firefox:

A second, more powerful tool is webscarab:

Is the 2k3 web server a member of your users' windows domain? Is the web app active directory enabled? How has it been set up in terms of authentication?
Thanks
Tom
