Joomla 1.5 template - are menus relocatable?

I haven't yet managed to find out how 1.5 templates work, so useful links are welcome:

Do i take it that menus on my template that appear on the right are not ordinarily relocatable to the left without a template rewrite or is this specific to the template? I can provide details if necessaryStart Free Trial
