Question

Best Photo/Movie Gallery for Joomla 1.5

Asked by: wotan1953

Hi -
My boss wants me to come up with a couple of extensions, fr Joomla 1.5. They should handle photo/movie gallery functionality and  back-end admin. I am looking through the Joomla Extension section at:

http://extensions.joomla.org/

But if any one has some direct experience or caveats, I would appreciate it. Oh and we are open to a commercial product.

Thanks -

Expose4 Flash Gallery
is pretty good for both video and stills.

If you just want a simple to install and easy to use photo gallery I recommend MorfeoShow.

Hey -
Thanks for the input. I will check it out. One thing I have run into since writing this, is the extension, has to be 1.5 native vs legacy. Also, I ran across a module call "JoomSuite Content". It looked very promising, but failed for us. Reason being is you have to enable ionCode Loader. Our sites use Zend Optimizer and the two do not play well together.

But let me check this out, and if all goes well, I award points. I probably won't get to it until Tues, but definitely all over it then :-)

Thanks -

Okay this is where I am, the Expose4 has potential, but I have an email into them, because the install is asking me to turn on Laegacy mode? I am running Joomla 1.5.5. I was pretty surprised by this, but hopefully they will have a work around.

Before I resort to the multiple packages approach (see binary geek) I will need to exhaust this first. This is what my boss thinks ;-)  Once I exhaust this and assuming I can not get it to work, then I will look at the individual packages.

If there are any more comments/uggestion/questions, just let me know. Also, let me reiterate we are willing to purchase a package, that a) works and b) has decent support and is not cost prohibitive i.e. we are not spending $300.

Thanks -
Mark

Gallery Menalto supports images and video and also has a backend.  Works with both joomla 1.5 and 1.0.15.  Its not got any fancy flash, but its better without it in my opinion.

Hi Faerialtog -

Apparently Expose4 are still on vacation.  Here is where I am with them, 4.6.2 said I needed to turn legacy mode on because I am running a newer version of Joomla 1.5.5. So I contact (actually I find this in their forum) I try the alpha version.  Then it installs, but I get:

        * JFolder::create: Could not create directory
        * JInstaller::install: Failed to create directory. "/usr1/solveint/www/administrator/language/nl-NL"

So I change permissions on directories and then it installs. But now I have :

ibXML extention       not installed       Fatal warning       Fatal warning
Ò  Must be installed and enabled in php.ini for using XML files. You probably need to ask your host to activate it.

So I am going to contact our host to get this setup. Once that is done we shall see :-) Thanks for the help so far.

Bignellrp -

I'm not seeing where this is listed as an extension for Joomla?  I'm assuming this is somewhat nonstandard. Do you have any links I might check out? I've found the gallery.menalto, but not much on Joomla?

Thanks -

Sorry to see that are having so much trouble. In an effort to understand your problem  I set a new install of Joomla and I then installed Expose. It went without a hitch so just to be sure here are the steps i followed to install this extension.

If you try to set it up it will return an error and ask for legacy plugin to be enabled. To enable it go to the plugin folder and cick on the x graphic on the same line as "System - Legacy". The page reloads and the graphic will turn to a green tick.

Then return to the Extensions install/uninstall menu and try installing Expose again. It should install OK now.

Expose will appear on the Components menu. The default password for manage albums is manager.

It may be that your host provider has placed some restrictions on your account. If this is the case it indicates that you will have problems installing other Joomla extensions in the future.

Expose is listed as a Joomla extension here.

You should easily be able to activate legacy mode, as fearialtog has suggested.

Legacy mode will be useful in installing not only expose but other handy Joomla extenstions which are not quite yet ready for native mode.

Make sure you have downloaed the most recent stable version of Expose which I think is Exposeprive4.6.2  from the developer's website or via the link at http://extensions.joomla.org/

Rowby

Okay  -
I went with Expose4.6.3 - I'll post a comment, regarding my problems. But in the end it works.
Thanks for the help.

Okay I went with Expose4.6.3, complained about not having libXML installed and enabled. Checked out phpinfo() and it (libXML) was already installed and enabled. Read the Expose forum and found out this error (which was listed as fatal) can be ignored.

Seems to work fine.  We have to test it, but so far so good.

Regarding legacy mode ... boss says, "no legacy mode" then no legacy mode.  Does it limit the field of options, you bet.

Thanks for everything, I appreciate you folks being there.
