Depending on your environment this can be a mess to figure out as mentioned before. Alternatively, you could leave the group in place as is, and simply remove the mail attributes so that it is no longer a DL as required without impacting any other use of the group. Security groups are not usable for mail until mail-enabled with an address within the messaging system.

No easy way other than going through all your file servers and machines and going through the ACL's on all those. There are tools like dumpsec that can help with that and you will find scripts on the net that can help.
If you are pretty sure it was not used on any ACLs you can change it to a distro list and if you hear of issues you can change it back to security. Obviously the first way is better.
