We have 30 laptops using Verizon wireless broadband that I would like to use openDNS on as a content filter. I am currently testing out a single system to see if this is possible. This is a Win XP - Dell Mini 12 using a Pantech UM175 EVDO USB card to connect to the internet.
I first set static DNS addresses in the dial-up connection on the laptop. Then, I added the IP of this system to my OpenDNS account, and setup the OpenDNS updater program to update its dynamic IP. The current IP address of this system shows correctly in the OpenDNS dashboard, so I know it is correctly updating its dynamic IP.
Afterwards, I set the content filtering in the OpenDNS dashboard to the highest level. I tried connecting to myspace/facebook and was successful. No luck with the filtering.
I went ahead and looked up a similar issue online and it seems that Verizon is transparently proxying port 53 traffic on their EVDO network. Here is a link to that issue:
http://forums.opendns.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=4635It seems there is a way to trick this by using a program called delegate. At the bottom of the above post, they try to explain how this is done. Would someone familiar with delegate be able to explain how this could be done?
Is there an alternative out there so that we could use OpenDNS for filtering, or perhaps a low cost substitute?
Thanks,
